Wind is a mechanical load
I-80 across southern Wyoming closes for wind more often than almost any interstate in the country, and light vehicles are restricted regularly. Even when it is open, the wind is a constant.
A car being pushed sideways for hours is being corrected for hours, and that is a genuine load:
- Tyres wear on one shoulder more than the pattern predicts, because the car is running at a small permanent slip angle.
- The steering rack and tie rod ends take continuous small inputs under lateral load rather than the straight-then-turn pattern of ordinary driving.
- Suspension bushings are loaded to one side for hours at a time.
- Dampers work continuously rather than intermittently, which heats the fluid and fades them.
It is why a Wyoming highway car can need an alignment without ever having hit anything, and why checking alignment on a schedule is worth more here than in a state where it is only a post-impact repair.
The highest state in the country, more or less
Wyoming has the second-highest mean elevation of any state, and a great deal of its driving happens above six or seven thousand feet.
Thin air carries away less heat per cubic foot, so every heat exchanger on the car — radiator, condenser, intercooler — is less effective than the same component at sea level. A cooling system that copes fine in Kansas has noticeably less margin here.
It also costs power. A naturally aspirated engine loses roughly three percent for every thousand feet, and turbocharged engines compensate by working the turbo harder — higher shaft speed and higher temperature for longer, which puts the weight on oil condition and on the state of the oil feed and drain lines.
Distance, and no inspection
The distances between towns are among the longest in the country and much of the road is genuinely empty. A marginal part here is a tow measured in hours rather than an inconvenience.
And Wyoming has no periodic safety inspection. Nothing checks brakes, suspension, steering, tyres or lights on any schedule.
Together those two facts make the same argument: replace on age rather than on failure, and look at the car yourself once a year with the wheels off. Battery, starter, alternator, water pump, belt and tensioner are the parts that strand a vehicle, and none of them are expensive.
Cold, and salt on the passes
Winters are long and severe. At twenty or thirty below a battery delivers a fraction of its rated current while the oil the starter must turn is at its thickest.
The damage that kills a battery happens in summer heat and cold only reveals it — which is why replacing on age, before winter, beats replacing on failure at a rest area on I-80.
Roads are treated in winter, so the salt-belt failures do apply: brake lines corroding from the outside, caliper slides seizing, wheel speed sensors bonding into aluminium knuckles. In this climate the removal is the expensive half of a job, so complete hubs beat bearings and loaded calipers beat rebuild kits.
Gravel and wildlife
A large share of county and access roads are unpaved. Grit is thrown at every boot, air filters load fast, and washboard fades dampers at high frequency.
Wildlife collisions are common on unlit highways, which makes headlight condition a safety item rather than a cosmetic one — and nothing here will inspect it for you.
