Gravel is most of the network
Iowa has a very large unpaved road network, and for a great many drivers the first and last miles of every journey are gravel. That is not a rural curiosity here; it is the default.
Gravel adds abrasion to every failure mode a paved road has:
- Boots and seals. Grit is thrown continuously at every rubber boot on the car. A torn constant-velocity boot on tarmac is a race against time; on gravel the joint has ingested abrasive by the end of the week.
- Air filters. Engine and cabin filters load at rates no service interval anticipates. Check them by looking rather than by counting months.
- Brake hardware. Dust plus moisture plus salt residue becomes a grinding paste around caliper slides, which is why slides seize here on cars that have never seen a coast.
- Wheel bearings. Water and grit are worked at the seal constantly rather than occasionally.
- Paint and glass, from stones thrown by oncoming traffic.
The seasonal range
Iowa runs from genuine winter cold to genuine summer heat, and both ends are demanding.
Summer heat destroys batteries. The chemistry that ends a lead-acid battery accelerates with temperature, and a battery under a bonnet in July is running that clock fast. Winter cold is what reveals the damage: at twenty below the battery delivers a fraction of its rated current while the oil the starter must turn is at its thickest.
Replace on age, before winter, at your convenience — not on failure, on a gravel road, in January.
The same range works every seal and gasket in the vehicle, and it moves tyre pressures enough between a cold morning and a hot afternoon to matter.
Salt on top of grit
Winter salting is heavy, so the gravel grit and the road salt work on the same car. The salt-belt failures apply in full: brake lines corroding from the outside, caliper slides seizing, wheel speed sensors bonding into aluminium knuckles, and underbody fasteners becoming a question rather than a formality.
The buying rule follows: in this climate the removal is the expensive half of a job. Complete hub assemblies rather than bearings, loaded calipers rather than rebuild kits, complete struts rather than bare dampers. The dearer part is usually the cheaper job.
Storms
Iowa gets damaging hail most springs and, less predictably, derecho events with straight-line winds strong enough to do structural damage.
For a car, that means lenses and fins. Hail cracks a polycarbonate lamp lens without shattering it, water gets in, and the assembly fails weeks later. It also flattens condenser and radiator fins, which reduces the ability to reject heat — a car that runs warm in traffic after a storm has a flattened front end rather than a failing thermostat.
Nothing inspects the car
Iowa has no periodic safety inspection and no emissions testing programme. On gravel roads that find every weakness, an annual look-over with the wheels off is the substitute: boots checked at full lock, wheels rocked at 12 and 6 o'clock, pad thickness measured, and brake fluid tested for water content.
