Ground that does not stay still

Much of southern Louisiana sits on soft, compressible soil that subsides. Roads built on it settle unevenly, and the surface that results is not simply worn — it is deformed. Dips, tilts, humps, broken edges and joints that no longer meet.

That is a suspension load rather than a wheel one. A pothole is a single impact. A settled road displaces the vehicle continuously, working the dampers through their travel repeatedly at speed, mile after mile.

Dampers fade under that rather than failing outright, and the driver adapts without noticing. A car that floats over a crest and needs two movements to settle has dampers that have stopped controlling the spring.

Control arm bushings tear under repeated shock loading rather than wearing out, which is why a Louisiana car clunks over joints at a mileage a smooth-road car would not.

Water standing on the road

Heavy rainfall, low elevation and a drainage system perpetually behind mean standing water is an ordinary driving condition rather than an event.

What that reaches:

1. 1Wheel bearings. A hot hub plunged into water draws a small amount past the seal as it cools. Repeated over years, it is why bearings fail earlier here than the odometer suggests.
2. 2Brakes. Rotors cool unevenly, and repeated wet-then-hot cycling accelerates corrosion between the hat and the hub — which is felt as a pulsation and blamed on a warped rotor.
3. 3Connectors low on the vehicle. ABS sensors, ride height sensors, parking sensors.
4. 4The air intake. Water past the filter ends an engine, and it happens every year to somebody following the vehicle in front.

Coastal parishes add salt water to all of it, which is a far more aggressive electrolyte than fresh.

The brake tag

Louisiana requires an annual inspection — the brake tag — covering brakes, lights, tyres, glass, wipers, the horn and the exhaust, with emissions testing in some parishes.

Given the roads, the failures cluster in suspension-adjacent items: tyres worn unevenly because the alignment has been wrong since the last impact, brakes on uneven wear from a seized caliper, and lights cracked rather than failed.

An alignment after any significant impact is part of the repair rather than an upsell. The geometry moved when the component did, and driving on it destroys a set of tyres well before the next inspection.

Humidity at the top of the scale

Louisiana is among the most humid states in the country and the cooling season is long. Almost all of the air conditioning compressor's work goes into condensing moisture rather than lowering temperature, which is a duty cycle far beyond what the temperature implies.

The evaporator stays wet, which is where the smell comes from, and the humidity corrodes connectors, grounds and aluminium rather than structure. An electrical fault that behaves differently in the wet is a connector — chasing it to a module is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.

There is no road salt, so a Louisiana car's underside is generally sound. The corrosion is electrical, and it is invisible until something intermittent starts.
