A wheel hub assembly combines the bearing, hub flange, wheel studs and usually the ABS sensor ring in one bolt-on unit. The symptom is a hum or grind that changes pitch when you steer at speed. Tone ring tooth count varies between trims, so a wrong hub can fit and still throw an ABS fault.

Common questions
- What does a failing wheel bearing sound like?
- A hum, growl or drone that rises with road speed rather than engine speed, and which changes in volume when the car is steered gently left and right at around 40mph. Loading the bearing by turning usually makes it louder on one side.
- Does the hub assembly include the ABS sensor?
- On most modern vehicles the tone ring is built into the sealed bearing, and many assemblies include the sensor itself. Where the sensor is separate it is reused. The listing states which arrangement applies.
- Will the wrong hub cause an ABS warning light?
- Yes, and it is a common and confusing failure. A hub can bolt on perfectly and still carry a tone ring with the wrong number of teeth, which makes the wheel speed signal disagree with the other three and sets a fault.
- Can I drive with a bad wheel bearing?
- Not for long. A failing bearing generates heat and play, and in the worst case the hub can seize or separate at speed. A noise that has become a vibration through the steering wheel should be treated as urgent.
