Ground that does not stay still
Much of New Orleans sits on soft, compressible soil, and a good deal of the city is below sea level. The ground subsides, and the roads built on it settle with it — unevenly.
The result is not a worn surface. It is a deformed one: dips, tilts, humps, collapsed edges, and joints that no longer meet. Add Belgian block and brick sections in the older neighbourhoods and the suspension is dealing with two different loads at once.
Deformation is a continuous load. A pothole is a single impact that bends a rim and brinells a bearing. A settled street displaces the vehicle through its suspension travel repeatedly, at speed, mile after mile. That is what fades dampers, and dampers fail gradually — the driver adapts without ever noticing.
Cobbles are a high-frequency load. Continuous small movements that heat a damper's fluid and tear bushings under repeated shock.
Water, because the drainage is mechanical
The city drains by pump rather than by gravity. When rainfall outpaces the pumps — which it does — water stands, sometimes deeply, on ordinary streets.
Driving through it draws water past hot hub seals as the bearing cools, reaches connectors low on the vehicle, and if it is deep enough goes past the air filter, which ends an engine outright.
Coastal parishes add salt water to that, which is a far more aggressive electrolyte than fresh, and it reaches brake hardware and anywhere aluminium meets steel.
Rinse the underside with fresh water after driving through anything brackish. The damage is done by what stays behind.
The brake tag
Louisiana requires an annual inspection covering brakes, lights, tyres, glass, wipers, the horn and the exhaust.
Given the streets, the failures cluster in suspension-adjacent items: tyres worn unevenly because the alignment has been wrong since the last impact, brakes on uneven wear from a seized caliper, and lights cracked rather than failed.
An alignment after any significant impact is part of the repair rather than an upsell. The geometry moved when the component did, and driving on it destroys a set of tyres well before the next inspection comes round.
Humidity at the top of the scale
New Orleans is among the most humid cities in the country and the cooling season is long. Almost all of the air conditioning compressor's work goes into condensing moisture out of the air rather than lowering its temperature.
The evaporator stays wet, which is where the smell comes from, and humidity corrodes connectors, grounds and aluminium rather than structure. An electrical fault that behaves differently in the wet is a connector — chasing it to a module is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.
There is no road salt, so the underside of a New Orleans car is structurally sound. The problems are the suspension and the electrics.
