The street is what damages the car
In most of the country a vehicle is worn out by driving. In New York City, and to a lesser degree in every dense neighbourhood upstate, a great deal of the damage happens while the vehicle is stationary.
Kerbside parking without a garage means a car spends most of its life within a foot of moving traffic and a granite kerb. What that produces is a repair list nobody in a suburb recognises:
- Mirror assemblies, clipped by passing traffic or by a delivery van reversing. The glass survives more often than the housing, and the housing is what carries the indicator, the blind-spot module and the puddle lamp on a modern car.
- Wheels, scraped and gouged against the kerb during parallel parking. A gouge is cosmetic. A rim bent against a kerb at an angle holds air and produces a vibration that survives every rebalance and every new tyre.
- Lamp units, cracked by contact rather than failed electrically. Water gets in through the crack and the assembly fails properly a month later.
- Bumper covers and parking sensors, from the taps that make a tight parallel space work.
- Window regulators, from the door being opened hard against a kerb or another car, and from break-ins.
The annual inspection dates every repair
Every registered vehicle is inspected once a year for safety, and on anything from 1996 onward there is an OBD-II emissions check alongside it. Lights, glass, mirrors and tyres are all inspection items — which is precisely the list the street has been working on.
The practical effect is that damage which would be ignored elsewhere becomes a deadline. A cracked lamp lens, a mirror that no longer adjusts, a hazed headlight that no longer projects a pattern: all of them pass unnoticed for months and then become a dated obligation.
A lit check engine light is an automatic emissions failure regardless of how the vehicle drives. So is a set of readiness monitors that has not completed, which is what clearing codes shortly before a test produces — and setting them again takes a full drive cycle, sometimes a week of ordinary use.
Downstate and upstate are different vehicles
The state contains two quite different ownership experiences and the parts that fail reflect it.
Downstate is short journeys, heavy stop-start traffic, bridges and tolls, and a car that may cover only a few thousand miles a year. Brakes wear fast for the mileage, the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature, and the battery lives chronically undercharged because starting takes more out of it than a two-mile trip puts back.
Upstate is long distances, real winters and some of the heaviest lake-effect snowfall in the country off Erie and Ontario. That is a corrosion and suspension environment: salted roads for months, broken surfaces from freeze-thaw, and mileage accumulated at highway speed.
A used vehicle advertised in one half of the state has led a completely different life from the same model in the other, and it shows in different places. Downstate: body damage, brakes, a tired battery. Upstate: underbody corrosion, suspension, seized fasteners.
Short trips are hard on an engine
A car that does two miles at a time never fully evaporates the water and fuel that condense into its oil, so the oil degrades on a schedule that has nothing to do with the odometer. Time-based oil changes exist for exactly this pattern and downstate is where they matter.
On a direct-injection engine it matters twice, because crankcase vapour is the source of the deposits those engines build on their intake valves. Short journeys and long intervals bring that problem forward by tens of thousands of miles.
Buying for a car that lives outside
Two habits worth adopting for a vehicle that is never garaged.
Order body and lighting parts by part number rather than by description. Mirror assemblies in particular differ by whether the vehicle has heating, memory, power fold, a puddle lamp, an indicator or a blind-spot module, and "driver side mirror" describes a dozen different parts on the same model.
And treat a cracked lens as urgent rather than cosmetic. Water inside a lamp unit corrodes the reflector and the connector, and it turns a twenty-minute lens swap into a whole assembly.
