A surface unlike anywhere else
Most cities have roads with holes in them. New York has a genuinely different surface, and it is worth listing what is actually under the wheels.
Steel construction plates. Laid over open utility work, sometimes for months. They sit proud of the surface, they have hard edges, and they move under traffic. Hitting the leading edge of one at speed is a sharp, high-energy impact.
Utility cuts. Trenches cut and patched, then cut again. A street can have dozens, each with a lip at either side.
Belgian block. Cobbled sections in the older neighbourhoods and along the waterfronts, which are a continuous high-frequency input rather than a single impact.
Bridge expansion joints. Every crossing has them, some of them substantial, and this is a city where crossing a bridge is routine rather than occasional.
Together they deliver more impacts per mile than any other American city, and the damage compounds:
- Bearings. Races brinelled by repeated sharp loading. The rumble arrives months after any individual impact.
- Bushings. Torn under shock rather than worn out. A clunk over joints and vague steering.
- Struts. Bent rods that bind, and dampers faded by continuous work.
- Steering racks. Loosened by repeated lateral loading against plate edges and kerbs.
- Wheels. Bent rims that hold air, look fine, and produce a vibration no rebalance can fix.
The highest brake cycle count anywhere
Traffic here means constant, repeated braking at low speed with the vehicle at full weight and no aerodynamic drag to help.
Pads are consumed at a mileage that makes no sense on paper — a car that has covered very few miles can be on its third set. Rotors see the heat cycles that go with it, and brake dust plus moisture is what seizes a caliper slide.
The corollary is that the odometer tells you very little about a New York car. Brake and suspension condition have to be measured rather than inferred, in both directions: high mileage may mean highway miles and a sound suspension, while low mileage may mean a decade of plates and potholes.
An annual inspection that catches it
Every registered vehicle is inspected once a year for safety and, on most, for emissions. Suspension, steering, brakes, tyres and lights are all inspection items, which is precisely the list this surface has been working on.
That inspection is genuinely useful here rather than a formality, because the wear is gradual and drivers adapt to it. A car that has slowly become vague and floaty feels normal to the person who has been driving it every day.
Salt, on top of everything
Winter treatment is heavy, so all of the above happens to a car whose brake lines, caliper slides and wheel speed sensors are corroding at the same time.
In this climate the removal is the expensive half of any job, so the complete assembly usually beats the component: complete hubs rather than bearings, loaded calipers rather than rebuild kits, complete struts rather than bare dampers.
