The canyons

Little Cottonwood, Big Cottonwood, Parley's, Provo Canyon. These roads climb thousands of feet in a handful of miles, and they do it with tight radii and no flat sections to recover on.

Descending is the hardest thing you can ask of a brake system. The heat is continuous with no interval to shed it, and the failures arrive in order: pad fade as the friction material outgasses, then boiling brake fluid, then thickness variation in the rotor from uneven cooling — felt afterwards as a pulsation.

Brake fluid absorbs water from the atmosphere over years regardless of mileage, and wet fluid boils a hundred degrees lower than fresh. Testing it takes a minute and it is the single most relevant maintenance item for canyon driving.

Climbing stacks three problems at once. High engine load, low road speed so there is little airflow through the radiator, and thin air at altitude that carries away less heat per cubic foot. A cooling system that copes at sea level has considerably less margin at seven thousand feet.

Altitude takes power

Air is thinner up here. A naturally aspirated engine loses roughly three percent of its power for every thousand feet, which is a large fraction of the way up a canyon.

Turbocharged engines compensate by working the turbo harder — better for performance and harder on the turbocharger, which runs at higher shaft speed and temperature for longer. What keeps one alive is oil condition and the state of the oil feed and drain lines: the feed cokes internally with heat-cycled oil and starves the bearing, the drain blocks and pushes oil past the seals.

Inversion, and why the test matters

In winter, cold air settles into the Salt Lake and Utah valleys and traps everything under a lid of warmer air above. The result is genuinely poor air quality for weeks at a time.

That is why emissions testing here is taken seriously rather than treated as a formality. Testing applies in the more populous counties, with the requirement depending on vehicle age.

The test reads the OBD-II system on anything from 1996 onward. A lit check engine light fails it outright, whatever the car is doing. So does a set of readiness monitors that has not completed, which is exactly what clearing a code produces — and setting them again takes a full drive cycle.

The route through is to fix the fault and then drive the car for several days of mixed use, including cold starts and a period at steady speed, before going back.

Magnesium chloride, not road salt

Utah uses magnesium chloride widely on winter roads. It works at lower temperatures than sodium chloride, which is why it is used, and it behaves differently.

Magnesium chloride is hygroscopic — it holds moisture against the surface rather than drying out — and it is notably aggressive toward aluminium and toward electrical connectors. It leaves a residue that stays active until it is washed off.

So wash the underside during winter rather than after it, and check connectors low on the vehicle when an intermittent fault appears in spring.

Two ends of the state

St. George in the south is Mojave-adjacent desert with genuine summer heat, where batteries last three or four years and plastic cooling components go brittle. The Wasatch Front is mountain climate with real winters. They produce different cars from the same registration.
