Forty below is a different category
Most of the country calls cold weather a nuisance. Here it is a specification.
At forty below, several things happen at once and each of them wears something.
The oil barely flows. It can take seconds to reach the top of the engine, and those seconds are the highest-wear period in the engine's entire operating life. A synthetic oil at the correct low-temperature grade flows dramatically better cold than a conventional one, and this is the climate where that difference is worth paying for rather than arguing about.
The battery is at a fraction of its capacity. A lead-acid battery loses most of its available current as temperature drops, while the oil the starter must turn is at its most viscous. Demand rises exactly as supply falls.
Rubber and plastic are brittle. Door seals tear, wiper blades chatter and split, and coolant hoses that would flex at forty degrees crack at forty below.
Cold cranking amps is the battery rating that matters, and the rule is one-directional: meet or exceed the original, never undercut it. A battery adequate in October at a lower rating is a battery that will not start the car in January.
Replace on age, before winter
The damage that kills a battery mostly happens in summer heat — the chemistry accelerates with temperature. Cold is what reveals it, on the worst possible morning.
That makes the calendar beat the test. A battery entering its fourth or fifth season will fail here, and testing it in September tells you about a battery that has not yet met January.
The same logic applies to the starter, the alternator and the serpentine belt. All three are cheap next to being stranded at forty below, and all three fail in the cold rather than because of it.
Salt and oilfield traffic
Winter treatment is heavy and the season is long, so the salt-belt failures apply in full: brake lines corroding from the outside, caliper slides seizing, wheel speed sensors bonding into aluminium knuckles.
In the west, heavy truck traffic serving the oil fields breaks up road surfaces faster than they are repaired. That is a suspension problem — continuous irregularity works dampers through their travel repeatedly and tears control arm bushings under shock loading.
And North Dakota has no periodic safety inspection. Nothing checks brakes, suspension, steering, tyres or lights on any schedule. Once a year with the wheels off, tracing the brake lines and testing the fluid, is the substitute.
The buying rule
In this climate the removal is the expensive half of any job under the car. A bearing pressed into a corroded knuckle, a strut on a bolt that has bonded into its sleeve, a caliper bracket on ten-year-old fasteners.
So the complete assembly usually beats the component: complete hubs rather than bearings, loaded calipers rather than rebuild kits, complete struts rather than bare dampers. The dearer part is the cheaper job, and it is the one that does not have to be done twice at forty below.
