Every journey is a short journey
The whole state is about forty miles across. Whatever the destination, most trips here are the kind an engine barely notices — and that is the problem.
An engine reaches full operating temperature after roughly fifteen to twenty minutes of running, and only then does the oil get hot enough to evaporate off the water and unburned fuel that condense into it during warm-up. A car that does eight minutes and stops never gets there.
The consequences compound quietly:
- The oil degrades on a clock, not an odometer. A time-based oil change interval exists for exactly this pattern and it is the one to follow here, whatever the mileage says.
- Fuel dilution thins the oil, which reduces the film strength protecting the bearings at exactly the point the engine is coldest.
- Condensation collects in the exhaust and the crankcase. A cold exhaust that never dries out rots from the inside.
- On a direct-injection engine it matters twice, because crankcase vapour is the source of the deposits those engines build on their intake valves. Short journeys bring that problem forward by tens of thousands of miles.
Brakes that corrode before they wear
The same short journeys mean the brakes never get hot enough for long enough to dry themselves out, and the car spends five months in road salt.
What follows is a car whose rotors are pitted and scaled while still well above minimum thickness, and whose caliper slides have seized without ever having done much work. It is the opposite of the highway car's problem, and it is why a brake job here is a corrosion job with a friction change inside it.
Salt from the water as well as the road
Narragansett Bay and the South County shore put most of the state within reach of salt-laden air, and the winters are salted heavily on top.
That is two corrosion mechanisms on one car. Road salt works from underneath, thrown into cavities and trapped; shore air settles on what is exposed and attacks aluminium, connectors and brake hardware. Very few states apply both to the same vehicle.
Anti-seize on the hub face and on wheel fastener threads at every brake job is two minutes that saves an hour, and here it is worth more than in most places.
The battery lives undercharged
Starting an engine takes a large amount out of a battery and a short journey does not put it back. Do that for years — particularly on a start-stop vehicle, which cycles the battery at every light as well — and the battery lives chronically undercharged, which sulphates the plates and shortens its life regardless of quality.
The tell is start-stop becoming intermittent and then ceasing altogether. That is the battery monitoring system reporting a measurement, not a fault to be cleared.
Emissions testing
Testing applies on a two-year cycle, reading the OBD-II system on anything from 1996 onward rather than sampling the tailpipe. A lit check engine light fails it outright, and so does a set of readiness monitors that has not completed after somebody cleared a code — which on a car of short journeys can take a long time to set again.
Checked
