Eight months of cooling load
Alabama's cooling season runs from roughly March to October, and on the Gulf Coast it barely stops. That is a duty cycle for both the engine cooling system and the air conditioning that a temperate climate reaches for a quarter of the year.
Two systems, both working continuously, and both with less margin than they look.
Engine cooling. Every system is sized against a worst case the manufacturer tested. In humid ninety-five-degree traffic with the air conditioning at full load, that worst case is an ordinary afternoon. A fan that engages a few degrees late, a thermostat that opens slowly, or a radiator with scaled tubes will never be noticed in Ohio and will overheat a car here.
Air conditioning. Humidity means most of the compressor's work goes into condensing water out of the air rather than lowering its temperature, which is a longer duty cycle than the thermometer implies. The condenser sits at the front taking every stone and insect, and a system that is cold at speed and warm in traffic is a condenser or a fan rather than a refrigerant charge.
Nothing inspects the car
Alabama has no periodic safety inspection and no emissions testing programme. Brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights and corrosion are never checked by anybody except the owner.
For someone who maintains their car that is a saving. For everybody else it means faults are found by failing, and the failures that matter are the ones with no warning: a corroded brake line that lets go when the pedal is pressed hard, a seized caliper slide that has been wearing one pad for a year, a ball joint with play nobody has felt.
Once a year, on the same date, with the wheels off, is the substitute for what other states legislate. For a used car it is the first thing to know — an Alabama vehicle has no inspection history because there is none to have.
Humidity corrodes what salt does not
There is no road salt anywhere in the state, so underbody corrosion in the structural sense is uncommon and a fifteen-year-old car generally comes apart on the bench.
What corrodes instead is electrical. Long humid summers work on connectors, grounds and anything aluminium. The tell is a fault that behaves differently in the wet, which is a connector or a ground rather than a module — and chasing it to a module is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.
Severe weather
North Alabama sits in a genuinely active severe-storm region, and hail is a real seasonal risk. Hail damages glass, body panels, and — less obviously — headlight and tail light lenses, which then take in water and fail properly weeks later.
A cracked lens is worth treating as urgent rather than cosmetic. Water inside corrodes the reflector and the connector, and a lens swap becomes a whole assembly.
Heat ages materials, not metal
With no salt, the ageing mechanism is ultraviolet and heat working on rubber and plastic. Bushings harden and crack rather than rusting away. Plastic cooling components go brittle and split rather than weeping. Wiper blades are measured in months.
The trap is that the car looks sound throughout — nothing has rusted — while every rubber and plastic component reaches the end of its service life at roughly the same time.
