Everything is a grade
There is very little level ground in West Virginia. Roads follow hollows and ridges, climb out of river valleys, and descend into them again. The interstates cross real elevation; the state routes do it more steeply and with less radius.
The result is a car that is always doing one of two demanding things.
Descending puts continuous heat into the brakes with no interval to shed it. The failure sequence is pad fade as the friction material outgasses, then boiling fluid, then thickness variation in the rotor from uneven cooling — felt afterwards as a pulsation.
Climbing puts the engine at high load while road speed stays low, which means little airflow through the radiator at exactly the moment the cooling system is asked for most. That is where a marginal fan, a slow thermostat or a scaled radiator shows up.
Engine braking is free and it is what the low gears are for. A lower gear on a long descent moves the energy into the engine instead of the friction material, and on these roads it is the difference between arriving with brakes and arriving without.
Roads that take a beating
Coal and freight traffic on state routes that were not built for it breaks up surfaces faster than they can be repaired. Add a genuine freeze-thaw cycle and the result is continuous irregularity rather than isolated holes.
That works a suspension through its travel repeatedly at speed, which fades dampers and tears control arm bushings. Dampers fail gradually and drivers adapt — a car that floats over a crest and takes two movements to settle has stopped controlling its springs.
Continuous cornering on top of that loads outer constant-velocity joints, tie rod ends and the steering rack far more than distance alone would.
The annual inspection
Every registered vehicle is inspected once a year, covering brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, glass, wipers, the exhaust and structural condition.
On these roads the failures are predictable: brakes on thickness or on uneven wear from a seized caliper, suspension on a leaking damper or a torn boot, and corrosion where the winter salt has gone structural.
The useful habit is to have the car looked at a month before the sticker expires rather than in the final week — that turns a forced purchase into a considered one.
Salt, and the buying rule that follows
Winters are cold and the salting is heavy, particularly at elevation. The salt-belt failures apply in full: brake lines corroding from the outside, caliper slides seizing, wheel speed sensors bonding into aluminium knuckles, and every underbody fastener becoming a question.
In this climate the removal is the expensive half of a job, which changes what to buy. A complete hub assembly rather than a bearing to press into a corroded knuckle. A loaded caliper rather than a rebuild kit for one already pitted. A complete strut rather than a bare damper on a bolt that has bonded into its sleeve.
The dearer part is usually the cheaper job, and usually the one that does not have to be done twice.
