Stop-start traffic is a friction budget
Every time a car slows, kinetic energy leaves it as heat in the friction material. On a highway a great deal of that slowing is done by aerodynamic drag and engine braking, and the pads only finish the job.
In dense commuting traffic none of that applies. The vehicle is at full weight, the speeds are too low for drag to help, and the brakes do essentially all of it — several hundred times a day, for an hour or more each way.
The result is a pad life that has almost nothing to do with the odometer. A commuter here can reach the wear indicator at a mileage where a highway car of the same model is barely halfway through its first set.
Which compound, and why it matters more here
Pad compound is usually a preference. In this traffic it is a decision with consequences you notice weekly.
Low-dust ceramic compounds produce far less of the black dust that coats a wheel, and they are quieter on the repeated light applications that make a semi-metallic pad squeal. In stop-start driving both of those effects are multiplied, because the number of applications is what generates them.
Semi-metallic compounds bite harder when hot and cost less, and they will cover a wheel in dust within a week here and announce every low-speed stop.
Neither is wrong. What is wrong is choosing on price for a car that brakes four hundred times a day, because the dust and the noise arrive immediately and last until the next set.
Rotors, and the number that decides
Rotor thickness is what decides whether a brake job is pads or pads and rotors, and in this traffic it matters more than the price difference suggests.
A rotor near its minimum thickness has less mass to absorb heat, and heat absorption is precisely what stop-start driving demands of it. Machining one that is already thin buys a smooth surface and takes away the margin it needed.
Measure it rather than judging by eye. The minimum is cast into the rotor's hat, and a micrometer settles the question in a minute.
Electric parking brakes and rear pads
An increasing share of vehicles here have an electric parking brake, and it changes the rear brake job entirely. The caliper piston is driven by a motor through a screw and cannot be wound back by hand — it has to be retracted electronically through the vehicle's service mode.
Forcing it strips the actuator gearbox, and the repair becomes an actuator or a caliper rather than a set of pads. Service mode also has to be exited afterwards, and the module usually needs a calibration routine to relearn the clearance to the new, thicker pads.
Pollen season is a maintenance event
For several weeks each spring the state is coated in a yellow layer thick enough to see on every surface. It is not merely cosmetic.
Cabin air filters load rapidly during it. A loaded cabin filter reduces airflow across the evaporator, which reduces air conditioning performance, which then gets diagnosed as a refrigerant problem and charged as one. Engine air filters load too, more slowly.
Check both by looking at them in late spring rather than by counting months. It is the cheapest maintenance decision available here and the one with the most obvious result.
Red clay dust does the same thing at a lower intensity all year, particularly on unpaved and construction-adjacent routes.
No salt, and the ageing that replaces it
There is no road salt in Georgia. Underbody corrosion is not the concern it is further north, and mechanical work goes accordingly — fasteners undo and brake lines have usable threads on a fifteen-year-old vehicle.
What ages a car here is heat and ultraviolet acting on materials rather than metal. Rubber bushings harden and crack instead of rusting away, plastic cooling components go brittle, and headlight lenses haze until the beam pattern is genuinely worse without anything reporting it.
The trap is that the car looks sound throughout, because nothing has rusted, while every rubber and plastic component quietly reaches the end of its life at the same time.
Emissions testing, around Atlanta
Emissions testing applies in a group of counties around metropolitan Atlanta rather than statewide, and the requirement depends on vehicle age and registration county. Confirm the current rules with the state programme before a renewal is due.
For anything from 1996 onward the test reads the OBD-II system, so a lit check engine light fails it whatever the car is doing.
