Salt water at hub height
Charleston floods on a clear day. Tidal flooding puts salt water across streets on a schedule set by the moon rather than by the weather, and Lowcountry roads elsewhere do the same during storms and king tides.
That is a corrosion mechanism northern drivers do not have. Road salt is a brine sprayed onto a road surface; this is immersion in sea water, at the level of the hub, the brake assembly and the lower suspension.
What it reaches:
- Wheel bearings. A hot hub plunged into water draws a small amount past the seal as it cools. Done repeatedly over years, it is why coastal bearings fail earlier than the mileage suggests.
- Brake hardware. Caliper slides, pins, clips and the pad abutments — the parts that have to move freely and stop doing so.
- Connectors low on the vehicle. ABS sensors, ride height sensors, parking sensors, and anything mounted near the bottom of a wheel arch.
- Aluminium against steel. Galvanic corrosion with sea water as the electrolyte is what seizes a wheel to a hub.
The air does the rest
Away from the flooding, salt-laden air reaches well inland from the coast and the sounds. It settles rather than being thrown, and it works on what is exposed: brake hardware, wheel fasteners, electrical connectors and aluminium.
Anti-seize on the hub face and on wheel fastener threads at every brake job is two minutes that saves an hour, and in the Lowcountry it is worth more than almost anywhere.
Nothing inspects any of it
South Carolina has no periodic safety inspection and no emissions testing programme. Brakes, steering, suspension, tyres and lights are never checked by anybody except the owner.
That is a genuine saving for anyone who maintains their car and a real risk for everyone else, and it makes one habit essential rather than optional: once a year, on the same date, with the wheels off.
For a used car it is the most important thing on this page. A South Carolina vehicle has never been checked by anybody and there is no inspection history to read. Look at the brake hardware, the hub seals and the connectors before looking at the mileage — and ask whether it has lived near the water.
Humid heat with no relief
Long hot summers with high humidity mean the air conditioning compressor runs a duty cycle closer to commercial refrigeration than to a temperate climate. Much of its work goes into condensing moisture rather than lowering temperature, which is why the evaporator stays wet and why the summer smell arrives.
The cooling system has less margin than it looks, too. A marginal fan or a slow thermostat that would never be noticed further north shows up here in traffic in August.
No road salt at all
Nothing is salted. Underbody corrosion in the structural sense is rare, and a fifteen-year-old car here generally comes apart on the bench.
The corrosion to look for is the coastal kind — outside in, on hardware and connectors — rather than the northern kind. They look completely different, and a car that looks sound underneath can still have every caliper slide seized.
