Roads that never go straight
Outside the interstates, Kentucky drives on two-lane routes that follow the terrain rather than cutting through it. Ridges, hollows, river valleys and horse country all produce roads that corner continuously.
That loads a car differently from distance on a straight highway. Constant cornering means:
- Outer constant-velocity joints articulating far more than they would in straight-line driving, working the grease and flexing the boot at its extreme.
- Tie rod ends and the steering rack taking continuous input under lateral load rather than the straight-then-turn pattern of a grid.
- Ball joints loaded laterally, which is the direction they are least happy in.
- Tyres wearing on the shoulders rather than across the tread.
The tell for a worn outer joint is a rhythmic click on full lock at low speed, unmistakable once heard. The tell for a worn ball joint is a knock over uneven surfaces and a steering wheel that feels vague either side of centre.
The mountain parkways
Eastern Kentucky's parkways and the routes through the Appalachian foothills are sustained grades. A long descent is continuous heat into the brakes with no interval to shed it, and the sequence is pad fade, then boiling fluid, then a pulsation afterwards from uneven rotor cooling.
Brake fluid absorbs water from the atmosphere over years regardless of mileage and boils lower every year. Testing it takes a minute and it is more relevant to driving here than most maintenance items.
Engine braking is free. A lower gear on a long descent puts the energy into the engine rather than the friction material.
Nothing inspects it
Kentucky has no statewide periodic safety inspection and no general emissions testing programme. Brakes, steering, suspension, tyres and lights are never checked by anybody except the owner.
On roads that specifically wear steering and joints, that is a meaningful gap. A ball joint with play, a torn boot or a leaking damper all develop gradually enough that the driver adapts, and none of them announce themselves before they matter.
Once a year with the wheels off, checking boots at full lock and rocking each wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, is the substitute. For a used car it is the first thing to do, because there is no inspection history to read.
Freeze-thaw and river humidity
Winters are cold enough for a real freeze-thaw cycle, which breaks up road surfaces and leaves the patched, uneven results that work a suspension. Salting happens, more in the north, so underbody corrosion is a genuine if moderate concern.
The Ohio River valley adds humidity through the summer, which corrodes connectors and grounds rather than structure. A fault that behaves differently in the wet is a connector rather than a module.
Louisville and Lexington add congestion on top, which is a brake problem: stop-start driving at full vehicle weight consumes friction material at a mileage rural driving would not approach.
Checked
