The valley traps the heat
Louisville sits in the Ohio River valley, and the combination of low elevation, river humidity and a large built-up area produces a measurable urban heat island — the city is reliably warmer than the countryside around it, and it stays warmer overnight.
That matters more than the peak temperature. A car parked in the city does not cool down as far overnight as one twenty miles out, so the heat soak is more sustained.
Two systems take it.
The air conditioning. Humidity here is at the top of the state's range, and most of a compressor's work in humid air goes into condensing water out of it rather than lowering its temperature. That is a considerably longer duty cycle than the thermometer implies, and it is why compressors and condensers are what this city replaces.
The evaporator stays wet as a result, which is where the summer smell comes from. A cabin filter changed on a real interval is most of the prevention.
Engine cooling. In humid ninety-plus traffic with the air conditioning at full load, a cooling system is at its designed limit. A fan engaging a few degrees late or a slow thermostat is invisible in a temperate climate and puts the gauge up here.
Humidity corrodes the electrics
There is comparatively little road salt here by northern standards, so structural corrosion is moderate. What corrodes instead is electrical: connectors, grounds and anything aluminium.
The tell is a fault that behaves differently in the wet. That is a connector or a ground rather than a module, and chasing it to a module is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.
Grounds low on the vehicle and connectors in the wheel arches are the usual culprits, and they are cheap to clean and re-protect if you find them before the module gets blamed.
A city that drives at every hour
Louisville is a major air-freight and logistics hub, and a great deal of the local workforce is on shifts. Traffic here runs through the night in a way it does not in a comparable city.
For a car that means running hours rather than miles. Engine hours, compressor hours and alternator hours accumulate faster than the odometer suggests, and running hours are what end a water pump, a fuel pump, a compressor and an alternator.
A Louisville vehicle with average mileage can have considerably more hours on it than that mileage implies. When buying used, the parts to look at are the ones that count hours rather than the ones that count miles.
Nothing inspects the car
Kentucky has no statewide periodic safety inspection and no general emissions testing. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres and lights are checked by nobody except the owner.
Once a year with the wheels off is the substitute: pad thickness measured rather than estimated, brake fluid tested for water content, boots checked at full lock, and each wheel rocked at 12 and 6 o'clock. For a used car it is the whole of the vehicle's inspection history, because there is none.
Checked
