A fuel pump module is the complete in-tank assembly: pump, strainer, level sender and reservoir on one hanger. It is sold whole because the module is shaped to a specific fuel tank, and a bare pump often will not seat correctly in another housing. Symptoms are long cranking, stalling under load, or a car that starts and dies.

- What are the symptoms of a failing fuel pump?
- Long cranking before the engine catches, stalling under load or when climbing, a loss of power at high speed, and in later stages a car that starts and dies immediately. A whining noise from the tank often precedes the failure.
- Does the module include the fuel level sender?
- Yes on these assemblies. The sender, pump, strainer and reservoir are supplied on one hanger, which is why the module is sold whole — the housing is shaped to a specific tank and a bare pump often will not seat correctly in it.
- Do I have to drop the fuel tank to replace the pump?
- It depends on the vehicle. Many have an access panel under the rear seat or boot floor, which makes it straightforward; others require the tank to be lowered. Draining the tank down first is sensible either way.
