What 2016–2023 Tacoma owners report about the fuel system
Owners have filed 83 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the fuel pump on the 2016–2023 Toyota Tacoma, and 218 filed under its fuel system. Those 83, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:
- 2016 Tacoma: 3 complaints
- 2017 Tacoma: 8 complaints
- 2018 Tacoma: 26 complaints
- 2019 Tacoma: 25 complaints
- 2020 Tacoma: 14 complaints
- 2021 Tacoma: 5 complaints
- 2022 Tacoma: 2 complaints
- 2023 Tacoma: none
NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.
A 2019 Tacoma owner, NHTSA complaint 11736679: "low pressure fuel pump in fuel tank failed. This part was already repaired from previous recall and failed again. Error code P0087. Vehicle shuttered and stopped in traffic. Broken bits of fuel pump were left in gas tank."
A 2022 Tacoma owner, NHTSA complaint 11764832: "Car has difficulty starting and at times won't start in hot weather. Was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed as a bad low pressure fuel pump. Had codes stored for low pressure fuel pump."

Which fuel pump module a 2016–2023 Tacoma takes
Modules differ by tank size, by engine, and between two- and four-wheel-drive versions that route the tank differently. The 2016–2023 Toyota Tacoma came with several powertrains, among them 2.7L I4 Automatic RWD and 3.5L V6 Automatic 4WD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
