What 2020–2025 Explorer owners report about the fuel system

Owners have filed 17 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the fuel pump on the 2020–2025 Ford Explorer, and 109 filed under its fuel system. Those 17, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2020 Explorer: 5 complaints
  • 2021 Explorer: 4 complaints
  • 2022 Explorer: 8 complaints
  • 2023 Explorer: none
  • 2024 Explorer: none
  • 2025 Explorer: none

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2020 Explorer owner, NHTSA complaint 11746795: "First the fuel pump control module went out and now for the 3rd time the electrical to the fuel pump control module has faulted"

A 2022 Explorer owner, NHTSA complaint 11718125: "Component/System: Low-pressure fuel pump/fuel delivery system related to Recall 25S75. Vehicle is a 2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid. Description: My vehicle is subject to Recall 25S75 involving the low-pressure fuel pump that can cause loss of fuel pressure and engine stalling."

Recalls that cover the fuel pump module on the 2020–2025 Explorer

  • 25V455000, 2021–2023 models: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Bronco, Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, F-550 SD, 2021-2022 Lincoln Navigator, Mustang, F-150, and 2022 Expedition vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump may fail, which can result in an engine stall while driving. Dealers will replace the low pressure fuel pump on super duty vehicles and update the powertrain control module (PCM) software on all other affected vehicles, free of charge.

A recall repair is free at any Ford dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.

Which fuel pump module a 2020–2025 Explorer takes

Modules differ by tank size, by engine, and between two- and four-wheel-drive versions that route the tank differently. The 2020–2025 Ford Explorer came with several powertrains, among them 2.3L I4 Automatic 4WD and 3.0L V6 Automatic 4WD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
