What 2016–2021 Civic owners report about the fuel system

Owners have filed 113 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the fuel pump on the 2016–2021 Honda Civic, and 383 filed under its fuel system. Those 113, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2016 Civic: 11 complaints
  • 2017 Civic: 5 complaints
  • 2018 Civic: 36 complaints
  • 2019 Civic: 40 complaints
  • 2020 Civic: 18 complaints
  • 2021 Civic: 3 complaints

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2016 Civic owner, NHTSA complaint 11746051: "Honda civic is stalling while driving due to faulty fuel pump or fuel delivery component. Computer not coordinating correct power."

A 2020 Civic owner, NHTSA complaint 11689713: "There is a known recall on the fuel pump and the last bulletin from Feb 25 #24008 lists All Vins except ones starting with JHM. My Honda has shut down on 6 occasions. I took it to a mechanic who diagnosed it as the fuel pump is bad. He showed me the bulletin. When I contacted Honda I was told this Vin is not included."

Which fuel pump module a 2016–2021 Civic takes

Modules differ by tank size, by engine, and between two- and four-wheel-drive versions that route the tank differently. The 2016–2021 Honda Civic came with several powertrains, among them 1.5L I4 CVT FWD, 2.0L I4 CVT FWD and 2.0L I4 Manual FWD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
