Buying car parts in Colorado

Colorado punishes brakes and cooling in a way flat states never do. A sustained mountain descent puts more energy through a brake system in ten minutes than a week of city driving, and it arrives as heat with no interval to shed it. Fade is a Colorado failure mode.

A descent is a brake test

Braking converts motion into heat. On a flat road that happens in short bursts with cooling in between, and a brake system sheds it easily.

A sustained descent is different in kind. The vehicle is giving up thousands of feet of altitude and every foot of it becomes heat in the brakes, continuously, for ten or twenty minutes. There is no interval.

What follows, in order:

  1. Pad fade. The friction material outgasses at temperature and the coefficient of friction drops. The pedal still feels normal and the car stops less.
  2. Fluid boiling. Brake fluid absorbs water from the air over time, and water boils far lower than fluid. Vapour in the line is compressible, so the pedal goes long or to the floor.
  3. Rotor damage. Extreme heat followed by uneven cooling produces thickness variation, which is felt afterwards as a pulsation.

The two purchases that matter here are therefore fluid and pads, and fluid is the one people skip.

Engine braking is the other half of the answer and it costs nothing. Selecting a lower gear on a long descent moves the energy into the engine instead of the brakes, and it is what the low ranges exist for.

Altitude takes power, and changes cooling

Air is thinner at elevation. A naturally aspirated engine loses roughly three percent of its power for every thousand feet, which is a substantial fraction of the way up a pass — and it is why a vehicle that felt adequate at sea level feels strained here.

Turbocharged engines compensate by working the turbo harder, which is genuinely better for performance and harder on the turbocharger. It runs at higher shaft speed and higher temperature for longer, and the two things that keep it alive are oil condition and the state of its oil feed and drain lines.

Thin air also carries less heat away. The cooling system, the intercooler and the air conditioning condenser are all rejecting heat into less dense air, which reduces their capacity exactly where the engine is working hardest.

The de-icer here is not road salt

Colorado uses magnesium chloride extensively rather than relying on sodium chloride. It works at lower temperatures, which is why it is used, and it behaves differently.

Magnesium chloride is hygroscopic — it holds moisture against the surface rather than drying out. It is notably aggressive toward aluminium and toward electrical connectors, and it leaves a residue that stays active until it is washed off.

What that means in practice:

  • Wash the underside during and after winter, not just in spring. The residue keeps working while it is there.
  • Aluminium suspension and body components deserve inspection on vehicles that are driven through the winter.
  • Connectors low on the vehicle — wheel speed sensors, ride height sensors, parking sensors — are the ones to check when an intermittent fault appears in spring.

A very large temperature swing

A Front Range day can move forty degrees between dawn and afternoon, and a mountain day more.

Every material in a vehicle expands and contracts through that, every day. Seals and gaskets that would live a decade in a stable climate work harder here. Tyre pressures move enough to matter between a cold morning and a hot afternoon, and a pressure set at either extreme is wrong at the other.

Batteries get the worst of both: hot enough in summer to run the chemical clock fast, cold enough in winter to expose what the summer did.

Emissions testing, on the Front Range

Emissions testing applies in the Denver metropolitan area and the northern Front Range rather than across the state, and the requirements depend on vehicle age and registration county. Check the current rules with the state programme before a test is due — the exemption for newer vehicles in particular has changed more than once.
