The biggest blocks in America

Salt Lake City's grid was laid out with blocks far larger than any other American city — wide streets, long distances between intersections, and signals spaced accordingly.

That produces a driving pattern unlike a normal urban grid. Instead of frequent gentle stops, you accelerate to a genuine speed and then stop from it, repeatedly, on every arterial run.

A stop from forty miles an hour puts roughly four times the energy into the brakes as a stop from twenty. So a Salt Lake commute of the same distance and the same number of stops as one in a tight-grid city puts substantially more heat through the friction material each time.

The consequence is pads that wear at a rate the mileage does not predict, and rotors that see higher peak temperatures than gentle city driving produces.

Brine dust off the lake

The Great Salt Lake has receded significantly, exposing large areas of lake bed, and wind lifts dust from it across the valley.

That dust is not ordinary dust. It carries salts from the lake bed, and salt plus the moisture in the air is an electrolyte — which means a corrosion mechanism in a city that is otherwise dry enough to preserve cars.

It reaches the same places coastal salt air does: caliper slides and hardware, wheel fasteners, electrical connectors, and anywhere aluminium meets steel. Combined with winter road treatment, it gives Salt Lake vehicles a corrosion profile that surprises people who expect a dry-climate car.

Commuting out of the canyons

A great many people here live up a canyon and work in the valley, which means a real descent every morning and a real climb every evening.

Descending is continuous braking heat with no interval to shed it — fade first, then boiling fluid, then a pulsation from uneven rotor cooling. Climbing is high engine load at low road speed in thin air, which is the cooling system's hardest case on three counts.

Doing both twice a day, every working day, is a duty cycle no flat commute produces. Brake fluid condition matters more here than almost any other maintenance item, and testing it takes a minute.

Inversion season

In winter, cold air settles into the valley and traps everything beneath a lid of warmer air. The resulting air quality is genuinely poor for weeks at a time.

That is why emissions testing here is enforced rather than nominal. On anything from 1996 onward the test reads the OBD-II system: a lit check engine light fails it whatever the car is doing, and so does a set of readiness monitors that has not completed after somebody cleared a code.

The route through is to fix the fault and then drive the car for several days of mixed use — cold starts, some steady-speed running — before going back. Clearing a code the day before a test is how a one-day job becomes a two-week one.
