Parking here is a mechanical event

City law requires wheels turned into the kerb on a grade, and there is a reason. Streets in this city reach gradients that most of the country never parks on at all.

Two components take that load, every night.

The parking brake. On a modern vehicle this is usually an electric actuator driving a screw inside the rear caliper piston. Holding a car on a genuine gradient loads it to a real fraction of its capacity rather than to a token, and actuators wear from cycle count and from load. A car parked on a hill twice a day is doing both.

The parking pawl, on an automatic transmission — a small piece of steel engaging a toothed wheel. It is designed to hold the vehicle and it is not designed to be the only thing holding it.

Rear pads need a scan tool now

An electric parking brake changes the rear brake job completely. The caliper piston is driven by a motor through a screw and cannot be wound back by hand — it has to be retracted electronically through the vehicle's service mode.

Force it and you strip the actuator gearbox, and the repair becomes an actuator or a caliper rather than a set of pads. Service mode also has to be exited afterwards, and the module usually needs a calibration routine to relearn the clearance to the new, thicker pads.

Put a battery maintainer on the car first. These routines run the actuators back and forth while the module watches system voltage, and a drop part-way through a calibration is how a straightforward job becomes a locked-out module.

Hill starts and full lock

Every journey here involves pulling away on a gradient and turning at full lock into a space that barely exists.

Full lock is the hardest thing you can ask of an outer constant-velocity joint — maximum articulation, grease worked hardest, boot flexed at its extreme. The tell is a rhythmic click on full lock at low speed, unmistakable once heard, and by the time it clicks the joint has ingested grit through a split boot.

Hill starts load the drivetrain and, on an automatic, the torque converter. On a manual they are what ends a clutch here at a mileage that would be half-life on the flat.

Fog, not rain

The city is damp far more often than it is wet, and the air comes off the Pacific carrying salt.

That corrodes from the outside in rather than from underneath — brake hardware, wheel fasteners, connectors and anything aluminium meeting anything steel. There is no road salt at all, so the underside stays sound while caliper slides seize and connectors green.

Anti-seize on the hub face and on wheel fastener threads at every brake job is two minutes that saves an hour here.
