Buying car parts in San Antonio

San Antonio has the oldest street layout of any major Texas city, laid out long before cars, and it runs one of the longest streaks of hundred-degree days in the country. Tight streets take mirrors and wheels; the heat takes batteries, cooling and everything rubber.

We ship anywhere in San Antonio, including Downtown, Alamo Heights, Stone Oak, New Braunfels, Schertz and the South Side.

This page has not been published to search engines yet. Everything on it is current. It is waiting on a person to read it and sign it off.

Streets from before the car

San Antonio's core was laid out in the Spanish colonial period, and the downtown, King William and the older neighbourhoods still follow it. Narrow, irregular, with parking on both sides and turns that were never designed around a turning circle.

That produces a repair list of contact damage rather than wear:

  • Mirrors, clipped by passing traffic or by making a turn that barely fits. On a modern car the housing carries the indicator, the heater and often a blind-spot module, so the cheapest listing is usually the wrong part.
  • Wheels, gouged against kerbs. A rim bent at an angle holds air, looks fine, and produces a vibration that survives every rebalance because balance was never the problem.
  • Bumper covers and parking sensors, from the taps that make a tight space work.

It also means constant manoeuvring at or near full lock, which is the hardest thing you can ask of an outer constant-velocity joint. The tell is a rhythmic click on full lock at low speed, and by the time it clicks the joint has already ingested grit through a split boot.

The longest heat

San Antonio regularly runs one of the longest streaks of hundred-degree days of any large American city. Not the hottest single day — the longest run of them, which is harder on a car.

Batteries are killed by heat rather than by cold. The chemistry accelerates with temperature: grid corrosion, water loss through the vents, plate degradation. Three to four years is a realistic life here, and a battery entering its fourth summer is finished whatever a load test says in February.

Cooling systems have no margin. A fan engaging a few degrees late or a thermostat opening slowly is invisible in a temperate climate and will put the gauge up here in traffic. Plastic end tanks and thermostat housings go brittle with heat cycling and split at once rather than weeping.

Air conditioning runs for most of every journey for most of the year, which is a duty cycle closer to commercial refrigeration than to a car in a temperate climate.

Replace the battery and address the cooling system on the calendar rather than on the failure. Both are cheaper to schedule than to be rescued from.

Base commuting

Several large military installations sit around the city, and a great deal of the region's commuting is to and from them — at fixed times, in heavy volume, on a small number of routes.

That is stop-start driving, which is a brake problem. Pads do all the speed control at full vehicle weight with no aerodynamic drag helping, and they are consumed at a mileage a rural car would never approach. Brake dust plus heat is also what seizes a caliper slide.

Flash flooding

Central Texas is one of the most flash-flood-prone regions in the country, and low crossings around the city flood fast.

Driving through standing water draws it past hot hub seals as the bearing cools, reaches connectors low on the vehicle, and — if it is deep enough — past the air filter, which ends an engine outright. The depth is genuinely hard to judge from a driver's seat, which is why the barriers exist.
