The A/C compressor pressurises the refrigerant that makes the system cold. It is replaced when the clutch fails to engage, the unit seizes, or metal from an internal failure has contaminated the system. Refrigerant type matters: R134a and R1234yf systems use different oils and fittings, and the two are not interchangeable — model year is usually what decides which one a vehicle has.

- Does my vehicle use R134a or R1234yf refrigerant?
- Vehicles built before roughly 2015 generally use R134a; most built after 2021 use R1234yf, with a mixed period between. The under-bonnet label states which. The two use different oils and different service fittings and must not be mixed.
- Do I need to replace the receiver drier or accumulator too?
- Yes, whenever the system has been opened. The drier holds desiccant that saturates once exposed to air, and reusing a saturated one puts moisture straight back into a new compressor. Most manufacturers make it a warranty condition.
- Does the compressor come with oil?
- It ships with an oil charge, but the correct total system charge depends on what remains in the condenser, evaporator and hoses. The amount to add is stated on the compressor label and should be measured rather than guessed.
