The Hill Country starts at the edge of town
West of the city the terrain changes completely. Limestone hills, roads that follow the contours, sustained climbs and descents, and tight radii — none of which the rest of Texas has.
That loads a car in ways flat Texas driving does not. Continuous cornering works outer constant-velocity joints, tie rod ends and the steering rack. Sustained descents put continuous heat into the brakes with no interval to shed it, which produces fade rather than the wear a city commute causes.
The failure sequence on a long descent is always the same: pad fade as the friction material outgasses, then boiling brake fluid, then a pulsation afterwards from uneven rotor cooling. Fluid absorbs water from the air over years regardless of mileage — testing it takes a minute.
Growth outpacing the roads
Austin has grown faster than almost any American city and the road network has been catching up for over a decade. Construction, patched surfaces, closures and volumes the layout was never designed for are the daily condition.
Stop-start commuting is a brake problem: the pads do all the speed control at full vehicle weight with no aerodynamic drag helping, so friction material is consumed at a mileage a rural car would not approach. That makes compound a decision with weekly consequences — a low-dust ceramic produces a fraction of the dust and is quieter on repeated light applications.
Patched and broken surfaces make it a suspension problem too. Struts lose control gradually enough that drivers adapt without noticing, control arm bushings tear under shock loading rather than wearing out, and a kerbed wheel produces a vibration that survives every rebalance because balance was never the problem.
Ask for a runout measurement before agreeing to a second tyre to chase one.
Caliche and cedar
Central Texas soil is limestone and caliche, and construction sites are everywhere. The dust is fine, it is abrasive, and it is constant.
Engine air filters load faster than any service interval anticipates. Cabin filters load faster still, and a loaded cabin filter reduces airflow across the evaporator — which reduces air conditioning performance and then gets diagnosed as a refrigerant problem.
Then there is cedar season. From December into February the mountain cedar pollen count here is among the highest of any allergen anywhere, and it coats everything. A cabin filter that was fine in November is loaded by January.
Check both filters by looking rather than by counting months. It is the cheapest maintenance decision available in this city and the one with the most obvious result.
No salt, and what ages a car instead
Nothing here is salted, so underbody corrosion is not a concern and a fifteen-year-old car comes apart on the bench.
What ages it is heat and ultraviolet working on materials: bushings hardening and cracking, plastic cooling components going brittle, headlight lenses hazing. The car looks sound throughout while every rubber and plastic component reaches the end of its life at once.
