Lake effect is not ordinary snow

Cold air moving across the relatively warm water of Lake Michigan picks up moisture and drops it on the eastern shore. West Michigan therefore receives substantially more snow than the state average, and it receives it in bands that can be intense and local.

For a car, the important consequence is not the driving — it is the treatment season. More snow events over more months means more days of brine and salt on the road, which means more exposure for every part of the vehicle that cannot dry out.

The salt-belt failure list applies here in a heavier form:

• Brake lines, corroding from the outside under clips and failing under pressure without warning.
• Caliper slides, seizing, so one pad wears and the other does not.
• Wheel speed sensors, bonding into aluminium knuckles until replacing one means drilling it out.
• Rotor-to-hub corrosion, causing runout felt as a pedal pulsation.
• Structural corrosion at rocker panels and suspension mounting points.

Buy the assembly

The buying rule in a heavy-treatment climate is that removal, not fitting, dominates the cost. A bearing pressed into a corroded knuckle, a strut on a bolt that has bonded into its sleeve, a caliper bracket on ten-year-old fasteners.

So the arithmetic changes: complete hub assemblies rather than bearings, loaded calipers rather than rebuild kits, complete struts rather than bare dampers, control arms with the joint already in them.

The exception is anything that is genuinely a wear item on a sound assembly — pads, rotors, filters, fluids. The rule applies to what has been sitting under the car in brine.

Short winter journeys

Lake-effect weather encourages short trips and slow ones, and a short journey in cold weather is hard on two things.

The engine never reaches full operating temperature, so the oil does not get hot enough to evaporate the water and unburned fuel condensing into it. Time-based oil change intervals exist for exactly this pattern.

The battery and charging system run at their least favourable: headlights, heated seats, rear defrost and the blower all drawing current, on journeys too short to replace what starting took out. A battery living chronically undercharged sulphates and fails early regardless of quality, and on a start-stop vehicle the system will disable itself first as a warning.

West Michigan humidity

The lake keeps humidity higher here than inland Michigan through much of the year. That adds an electrical corrosion mechanism on top of the underbody one — connectors and grounds rather than structure.

The tell is a fault that behaves differently in damp weather. That is a connector, not a module, and chasing it to a module is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive one.

Michigan inspects nothing, so none of the above is ever checked by anybody but the owner. Once a year with the wheels off, tracing brake lines end to end, is the substitute.
