Buying car parts in Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City covers an enormous area, so ordinary journeys here are long ones. That produces highway wear inside a city, in a climate that brings damaging hail in spring and freezing rain in winter — two very different kinds of damage on the same vehicle.

We ship anywhere in Oklahoma City, including Downtown, Edmond, Norman, Moore, Yukon and Midwest City.

This page has not been published to search engines yet. Everything on it is current. It is waiting on a person to read it and sign it off.

A city you drive across

Oklahoma City covers one of the largest municipal land areas in the country, and the metro extends well beyond that. An ordinary cross-town trip is a highway journey, and commuting from the suburbs is a real distance.

That produces highway wear inside a metropolitan area:

Brakes last a long time — long enough that corrosion can become the limiting factor rather than friction. A rotor with plenty of thickness left can be pitted enough to need replacing.

Everything that rotates accumulates hours. Wheel bearings, constant-velocity joints, tyres and the drivetrain wear by hours under load rather than by stop-start cycles.

The tell for a bearing is a hum that rises with road speed and ignores engine speed. Rotate the tyres front to back before condemning one, because cupped tyres sound almost identical and the test is free.

Two kinds of storm, six months apart

Spring brings hail, and Oklahoma is at the centre of the region that gets the most damaging hail on earth. The dents get claimed; the parts that fail afterwards are the lenses and the fins.

Hail cracks a polycarbonate lamp lens without shattering it, sometimes finely enough that nobody sees it. Water gets in, the reflector corrodes, and the assembly fails properly a month later. It also flattens condenser and radiator fins, which reduces the surface available to reject heat — a car that ran cool before a storm and warm in traffic afterwards has a flattened front end.

Winter brings ice. Freezing rain here produces a glaze over every surface at once, and glaze is the one road condition where very little a tyre can do helps. What matters instead is that the systems you fall back on are in good order: brakes that are actually there, tyres whose rubber has not hardened with age, and lighting that projects rather than scatters.

Ice storms also bring branches down onto parked cars, which cracks lenses in exactly the way hail does.

Red dirt

The soil here is fine and it gets everywhere, particularly on the wind and around the constant construction that a growing metro produces.

Engine air filters load faster than any service interval anticipates, costing power and economy before anything appears on the dashboard. Cabin filters load faster still, and a loaded cabin filter reduces airflow across the evaporator — which reduces air conditioning performance and then gets diagnosed as a refrigerant problem.

Check both by looking rather than by counting months.

Nothing inspects the car

Oklahoma has no periodic safety inspection and no emissions testing. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres and lights are checked by nobody but the owner.

Given hail, ice and long distances, an annual look-over with the wheels off is the substitute — and for a used car it matters doubly, because hail history does not appear on a title and there is no inspection record to read.

Checked

Tell us the vehicle and we will check the part against it before it ships. Ask us.
