Sea water on a sunny day
Miami floods on the tide rather than on the weather. King tides push sea water up through the drainage system and across low-lying streets on clear days, on a schedule set by the moon.
That is a different and far more aggressive mechanism than road salt. Road salt is brine sprayed on a surface; this is immersion in sea water at the level of the hub, the brake assembly and the lower suspension.
What it reaches:
- Wheel bearings. A hot hub plunged into salt water draws a small amount past the seal as it cools and the air inside contracts. Once is nothing; on a recurring schedule for years it is why bearings here fail at mileages that make no sense.
- Brake hardware. Slide pins, clips and pad abutments — the parts that must move freely and stop doing so.
- Connectors low on the vehicle. ABS sensors, parking sensors and anything near the bottom of a wheel arch.
- Galvanic corrosion, which is what seizes an aluminium wheel onto a steel hub.
Traffic that brakes hard
Miami has the densest traffic in Florida and a driving culture to match: closer following, later braking, more lane changes.
That is a friction problem. The pads do all the speed control at full vehicle weight, hard and often, with no aerodynamic drag helping. Pads are consumed at a mileage that makes no sense on paper and the heat cycles are more severe than gentle city driving produces.
Pad compound therefore matters more here than it would elsewhere. A low-dust ceramic produces a fraction of the dust — and in a city where a semi-metallic pad will coat a wheel within a week, that is a weekly difference rather than an abstraction.
Hardware is not packaging either. New shims, clips and properly greased slide pins are what stop a caliper dragging, and a dragging caliper in this traffic glazes a pad and destroys a rotor in weeks.
The air conditioning never stops
There is no off-season. The compressor is engaged for essentially every mile of every journey, and in this humidity most of its work is condensing moisture out of the air rather than lowering its temperature.
That means a wet evaporator — which is where the summer smell comes from — and a condenser at the front of the car working continuously while taking every stone and insect. A system that is cold at speed and warm in traffic is a condenser or a fan, not a refrigerant charge.
No road salt, and the corrosion is still worse
Nothing here is salted and the underside of a Miami car looks structurally sound. That is not the same as being in good condition.
The corrosion is coastal — outside in, on brake hardware, connectors and aluminium — and on a car that also floods periodically it is more aggressive than the northern kind. A vehicle that passes a visual underbody check can still have every caliper slide seized and every low connector green.
