A city you drive across, not through
Jacksonville's consolidated boundaries make it the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States. A trip from one side to the other is a genuine highway journey, and even ordinary errands cover distances that would be intercity elsewhere.
That produces a highway wear profile inside a metropolitan area, which is not what city mileage normally looks like.
Brakes last a long time. Sustained running asks little of them — long enough, in fact, that corrosion becomes the limiting factor rather than friction. A rotor with plenty of thickness left can be pitted and scaled enough to need replacing, and slides can seize without ever having worked hard.
Everything that rotates accumulates hours. Wheel bearings, constant-velocity joints, tyres and the drivetrain wear by hours under load.
Everything that runs continuously counts hours too. The fuel pump, the water pump and the alternator are hour-life components, and here they arrive well before they would on a city car of the same mileage.
The river, and the bridges
The St. Johns River runs through the middle of the city, and the crossings concentrate traffic. That means periods of crawling in heat on bridges with no shade, which is the cooling system's worst case: high ambient, air conditioning at full load, no airflow through the radiator.
Bridge expansion joints are a suspension input as well, and on a city where the bridges are unavoidable a car crosses them daily.
Salt air at the coast end
The Atlantic beaches are part of the city, and salt-laden air reaches well inland from them.
It corrodes from the outside in rather than from underneath — caliper hardware, wheel fasteners, electrical connectors, and anywhere aluminium meets steel. A car that lives at the beach and one that lives on the Westside corrode very differently despite the same registration.
Anti-seize on the hub face and on wheel fastener threads at every brake job is two minutes that saves an hour on the coastal side.
Port and freight traffic
Jacksonville is a major port, and heavy freight moves through the city on the same roads. That means surfaces that take more punishment than the traffic count alone suggests, and it means sharing the road with vehicles that throw more debris.
Florida inspects nothing — no safety inspection and no emissions testing anywhere in the state. Every one of the failures above is found by the owner or not at all, which makes an annual look-over with the wheels off the substitute for what other states legislate.
