A mountain road inside the city
The Catalina Highway climbs from the desert floor to nearly nine thousand feet on Mount Lemmon, and it does it in under thirty miles. There is nothing else like it in an American city.
Going up is the cooling system's hardest case, and for three reasons at once: high engine load, low road speed so there is little airflow through the radiator, and thinning air that carries away less heat per cubic foot with every thousand feet gained.
Coming down is the brake system's hardest case. Six thousand feet of elevation has to become heat, continuously, with no interval to shed it. The failure sequence is always the same:
- Pad fade. The friction material outgasses at temperature and its coefficient drops. The pedal feels normal and the car stops less.
- Fluid boiling. Brake fluid absorbs water from the atmosphere over years regardless of mileage, and water boils far below fluid. Vapour compresses, so the pedal goes long or to the floor.
- Thickness variation in the rotor from extreme heat and uneven cooling, felt afterwards as a pulsation.
The monsoon, and the washes
Tucson's summer monsoon brings intense, brief storms, and the desert does not absorb them. Water runs into the washes and across the roads that cross them, fast and deeper than it looks.
Driving through it draws water past hot hub seals as the bearing cools, reaches connectors low on the vehicle, and — if it is deep enough — past the air filter, which ends an engine outright. The barriers at wash crossings exist because depth and current are genuinely hard to judge from a driver's seat.
The same storms move enormous quantities of dust ahead of them, which loads every filter on the car.
Higher, and cooler, than Phoenix
Tucson sits around two and a half thousand feet, meaningfully higher than Phoenix, and it cools off at night in a way the valley does not.
That is easier on batteries and easier on plastic cooling components — a Tucson car ages more slowly than a Phoenix one at the same age. But the altitude costs power: a naturally aspirated engine loses roughly three percent for every thousand feet, and it starts here rather than at sea level.
Grit, and nothing that rusts
Sonoran desert grit is coarser than valley dust and it abrades. Paint, glass and lamp lenses are sandblasted over years, and a hazed lens scatters light rather than projecting it.
There is no road salt and very little moisture, so underbody corrosion is close to absent. Fasteners undo, brake lines have usable threads, and the repair estimates that assume a fight do not apply here — the component is usually the right purchase rather than the complete assembly.
