A hundred degrees, twice a year
Omaha runs from well below zero in January to well above ninety in July, and both ends do damage of their own kind.
Heat destroys batteries. The chemistry that ends a lead-acid battery accelerates with temperature: grid corrosion, water loss through the vents, plate degradation. A battery under a bonnet through a Nebraska summer is running that clock fast.
Cold reveals it. At twenty below the battery delivers a fraction of its rated current while the oil the starter must turn is at its thickest — demand rising exactly as supply falls. The battery does not fail in January because January broke it. It fails in January because July did.
Replace on age, before winter, at your convenience. A test in October tests a battery that has already taken the damage but has not yet met the load that exposes it.
The same range works every seal and gasket in the vehicle, and it moves tyre pressures far enough between a cold dawn and a hot afternoon that a pressure set at either extreme is wrong at the other.
Spring storms
The Missouri River valley gets severe convective storms through spring and early summer, and hail with them.
The panels get claimed. The parts that fail afterwards are the lenses and the fins. Hail cracks a polycarbonate lamp lens without shattering it; water gets in, the reflector corrodes, and the assembly fails weeks later. It flattens condenser and radiator fins too, reducing the surface available to reject heat — which shows up as a car that cooled fine before the storm and runs warm in traffic after it.
The corridor
Interstate 80 runs through the city and carries an enormous volume of freight, and a great deal of local driving is on it and on the ring routes.
Sustained running at speed is gentle on brakes and hard on everything that rotates. Hours at load accumulate on wheel bearings, constant-velocity joints, tyres and the drivetrain. The tell for a bearing is a hum that rises with road speed and ignores engine speed — rotate the tyres front to back before condemning one, because cupped tyres sound almost identical and the test is free.
Brakes on a corridor car often corrode before they wear, so a rotor with plenty of thickness left can be pitted enough to need replacing.
Nothing inspects it
Nebraska has no periodic safety inspection and no emissions testing. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres and lights are checked by nobody except the owner.
Given the temperature range, the storms and the winter treatment, that makes an annual look-over with the wheels off the substitute for what other states legislate: pad thickness measured rather than estimated, brake fluid tested for water, brake lines traced end to end, and each wheel rocked at 12 and 6 o'clock.
For a used car it is the first thing to do. An Omaha vehicle has no inspection history because there is none to have, and hail history does not appear on a title either.
