Two corrosion mechanisms, one car

Most cities get one. Milwaukee applies both to the same vehicle.

Road salt, from underneath, through a long treatment season. Thrown into cavities by the wheels and trapped there, corroding brake lines, seizing caliper slides, bonding wheel speed sensors into aluminium knuckles, and turning every underbody fastener into a question.

Lake humidity, from the air, all year. It settles on what is exposed and attacks connectors, grounds, aluminium and brake hardware from the outside in — the same mechanism a coastal city has, without the salt content but with far more months of it.

The result is a car whose underside looks like a salt-belt vehicle and whose connectors look like a coastal one.

Short journeys mean nothing dries out

Milwaukee is a compact city and a great many journeys here are short. That compounds both mechanisms.

Brakes never get hot enough for long enough to drive moisture off, so rotor faces pit and scale while still well above minimum thickness, and caliper slides seize without ever having done much work. A brake job here is a corrosion job with a friction change inside it.

The engine never reaches full operating temperature, so the oil does not get hot enough to evaporate the water and unburned fuel condensing into it. Time-based oil intervals exist for exactly this pattern, and the mileage will always argue against them.

The exhaust never dries out either, which is why it rots from the inside on a car that has covered very few miles.

Winter and the window mechanism

Cold does something specific to power windows that catches people out.

The felt runs the glass slides in stiffen in cold weather, and grit and salt residue collect in them. The motor works harder against that resistance every time, and on a cable-type regulator — the most common design — the steel cable frays under the extra load and eventually jumps its drum.

What you hear is a grinding with the glass tilting or sticking. That is the regulator, not the motor, and the fix is the complete assembly: all the labour is getting the door card and vapour barrier off, and fitting a new motor to a fatigued regulator means doing it twice.

Cleaning and lubricating the runs with a rubber-safe product before winter genuinely reduces the load, and it costs the price of a can.

Wind off the water

The lakefront routes take a sustained crosswind straight off the water. Continuous correction against it wears tyres asymmetrically and works the steering rack and tie rod ends — one of the reasons a lakefront commuter can need an alignment without having hit anything.

Wisconsin inspects nothing, so none of this is ever checked by anybody but the owner. Once a year with the wheels off, tracing the brake lines end to end and testing the fluid for water, is the substitute for what other states legislate.
