Hills, in a state that mostly does not have them
Most of Ohio is flat. Cincinnati is not. The city is built on the hillsides above the Ohio River, and the residential streets that climb them reach gradients that nothing else in the state approaches — steep enough that the city historically ran funicular inclines to get people up them.
That changes two things about running a car here.
Parking is a load. A car left on a Cincinnati hillside is genuinely held by its parking brake and its transmission, every night. On a modern vehicle the parking brake is an electric actuator driving a screw inside the rear caliper piston, and holding a car on a real gradient loads it to a fraction of its capacity rather than to a token.
The parking pawl in an automatic transmission is a small piece of steel engaging a toothed wheel. It is designed to hold the vehicle and not designed to be the only thing holding it.
Descending is continuous braking. Coming off the hills into the basin puts heat into the brakes without the interval a flat road provides. Repeated several times a day, that is a duty cycle no other Ohio city produces — and the failure sequence is fade first, then boiling fluid, then a pulsation from uneven rotor cooling.
Rear pads need a scan tool
An electric parking brake changes the rear brake job completely. The piston is driven by a motor through a screw and cannot be wound back by hand — it has to be retracted electronically through the vehicle's service mode.
Force it and you strip the actuator gearbox, and the repair becomes an actuator or a caliper rather than a set of pads. Service mode has to be exited afterwards, and the module usually needs a calibration routine to relearn the clearance to the new, thicker pads.
Put a battery maintainer on first. These routines run the actuators while the module watches system voltage, and a drop part-way through is how a straightforward job becomes a locked-out module.
Hill starts and full lock
Every hillside journey involves pulling away on a gradient and turning at full lock into a driveway that barely fits.
Full lock is the hardest thing you can ask of an outer constant-velocity joint — maximum articulation, grease worked hardest, boot flexed at its extreme. The tell is a rhythmic click on full lock at low speed, and by then the joint has ingested grit through a split boot.
Hill starts load the torque converter on an automatic and end a clutch early on a manual.
Outside E-Check, and the river
Ohio's emissions programme covers counties in the north-east of the state. Cincinnati is not among them, so there is no emissions test here — and no safety inspection anywhere in Ohio either.
The river valley holds humidity through much of the year, which corrodes connectors and grounds rather than structure. A fault that behaves differently in damp weather is a connector, not a module.
