Salt from the air and salt from the water
Hampton Roads gets two corrosion mechanisms that most of Virginia does not.
Atlantic salt air, all year, carried inland on the sea breeze. It settles rather than being thrown, and it attacks what is exposed: caliper hardware, wheel fasteners, electrical connectors, and anywhere aluminium meets steel.
Recurrent tidal flooding. This region floods on a schedule set by the tide rather than by the weather, and a king tide or a nor'easter puts salt water across low-lying roads. That is immersion rather than spray, at the level of the hub, the brake assembly and the lower suspension.
The second is far more aggressive than road salt, because sea water is a better electrolyte than a brine solution on a road surface.
What it reaches:
- Wheel bearings. A hot hub plunged into salt water draws a small amount past the seal as it cools. Repeated over years, it is why coastal bearings fail well before their mileage suggests.
- Brake hardware. Slide pins, clips and pad abutments — the parts that must move freely and stop doing so.
- Connectors low on the vehicle. ABS sensors, ride height sensors and parking sensors.
- Galvanic corrosion, which is what seizes an aluminium wheel to a steel hub.
The tunnels
The Hampton Roads crossings queue, sometimes for a long time, and a queue means an engine running at idle with no airflow through the radiator or the condenser.
Extended idling is a specific load. The alternator supplies the full electrical load at the lowest speed it will ever turn, with the least cooling it will ever get. The air conditioning works against solar gain through glass with no ram air.
That combination finds a marginal cooling fan, a tired alternator, a condenser with damaged fins, and an air conditioning system that is adequate moving and inadequate stationary.
Base commuting
The naval and military installations here generate enormous, concentrated commuting flows at fixed times on a small number of routes.
That is stop-start driving, which is a brake problem: pads doing all the speed control at full vehicle weight with no aerodynamic drag helping. Combined with salt air seizing the slides, it is why brake hardware rather than brake friction is so often the actual repair here.
The annual inspection
Virginia inspects every registered vehicle once a year, and the safety inspection is one of the more thorough in the country — brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, glass, wipers, the exhaust.
In this environment the failures cluster where the salt has been working: brakes on uneven wear from a seized caliper, corroded lines, and lighting where water has got into a lens.
Emissions testing applies in Northern Virginia rather than here, so a check engine light in Hampton Roads is a maintenance question rather than a registration deadline.
