Buying car parts in Philadelphia

Philadelphia's rowhouse streets were laid out for carts and are now parked on both sides, leaving a running lane barely wider than a car. Contact damage is not an accident here, it is a condition of driving — and the Belgian block sections underneath handle the rest of it.

We ship anywhere in Philadelphia, including Center City, South Philadelphia, Fishtown, West Philadelphia, Manayunk and the Northeast.

Streets built for carts

Large parts of Philadelphia were laid out in the eighteenth century for vehicles a fraction of the size of a modern car, and the rowhouse blocks still follow that plan.

Park on both sides, as everybody does, and the running lane is barely wider than a vehicle. Add delivery vans, refuse collection and a bus route and the clearances become genuinely marginal.

What that produces is contact damage rather than wear:

  • Mirrors, clipped by passing traffic and by the vehicle coming the other way. On a modern car the housing carries the indicator, the heating element and often a blind-spot module, so ordering the cheapest listing usually gets the wrong part.
  • Wheels, gouged against kerbs during parallel parking. A rim bent at an angle holds air, looks fine, and produces a vibration that survives every rebalance.
  • Bumper covers and parking sensors, from the taps that make a tight space work.
  • Door edges and window regulators, from doors opened hard against kerbs and other cars.
  • Lamp lenses, cracked by contact rather than failed electrically. Water gets in and the assembly fails a month later.

Belgian block and utility cuts

The older streets and the waterfront sections are cobbled, which is a continuous high-frequency input into the suspension rather than a single impact. That fades dampers, because a damper turns movement into heat and cobbles are movement without pause.

Utility cuts — trenched, patched, re-cut — add sharp edges throughout the network. Each one is a small impact that brinells bearing races a little further and works bushings under shock loading.

The combination is why a Philadelphia car can have a tired suspension at a mileage that would be nothing anywhere else.

The inspection has a date on it

Every registered vehicle is inspected annually for safety, with emissions testing added in this region. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres, lights, glass, mirrors and structural corrosion are all inspection items — precisely the list the streets have been working on.

The useful habit is to have the car looked at a month before the sticker month rather than in the final week. That turns a forced purchase into a considered one, which is the difference between ordering the correct mirror and accepting whatever is on a shelf.

A lit check engine light fails the emissions portion whatever the car is doing, and so does a set of readiness monitors that has not completed after a code clear — which on a car of short city journeys takes a long time to set again.

Salt underneath

Winter treatment is applied and the freeze-thaw cycle is real, so the contact damage above happens to a car whose brake lines and caliper slides are corroding at the same time.

In a treated climate the removal is the expensive half of any job under the car, which is why the complete assembly usually beats the component here.
