A city that drives at every hour
Memphis is one of the world's largest air-cargo hubs and a major road and rail freight centre. A very large share of the local workforce is on shifts, and the roads carry traffic through the night in a way most cities of this size do not.
For a car, that means running hours rather than miles. Engine hours, alternator hours, compressor hours and fuel pump hours accumulate faster than the odometer suggests.
Running hours — not distance — are what end the components that operate continuously:
- The fuel pump, submerged in the tank and cooled by the fuel around it. Hours of running, and running consistently low on fuel is hard on one.
- The alternator, particularly when half those hours are at night with lights, wipers and heating drawing current.
- The water pump and the timing drive, both hour-life components.
- The air conditioning compressor, in a climate where it runs for most of the year.
Street surfaces
Memphis city streets are among the roughest in the state — a combination of age, heavy vehicle traffic, patching that does not keep pace, and a freeze-thaw cycle that, while milder than the north, is enough to break surfaces apart.
That is a suspension load. Continuous irregularity works dampers through their travel repeatedly, which fades them rather than damaging them, and repeated sharp impacts tear control arm bushings and brinell bearing races.
Dampers fail gradually and drivers adapt. A car that floats over a crest and needs two movements to settle has stopped controlling its springs, and nothing in Tennessee will ever fail it for that.
A bent rim holds air, looks fine, and produces a vibration that survives every rebalance. Ask for runout before buying a second tyre.
Delta humidity
Memphis sits in the Mississippi Delta and the summers are hot and very humid.
Almost all of the air conditioning compressor's work goes into condensing moisture out of the air rather than lowering its temperature, which is a duty cycle far beyond what the thermometer implies. The evaporator stays wet, which is where the summer smell comes from.
Humidity is also the corrosion mechanism here, because road treatment is light. It attacks connectors, grounds and aluminium rather than structure, and the tell is a fault that behaves differently in damp weather — a connector, not a module.
Nothing inspects it
Tennessee has no statewide safety inspection and no general emissions testing. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres and lights are checked by nobody except the owner.
Combined with round-the-clock use and rough surfaces, that makes an annual look-over with the wheels off less optional here than in most places.
