What 2017–2025 Model 3 owners report about the visibility

Owners have filed 16 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention a side mirror on the 2017–2025 Tesla Model 3, and 200 filed under its visibility. Those 16, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2017 Model 3: none
  • 2018 Model 3: 2 complaints
  • 2019 Model 3: 4 complaints
  • 2020 Model 3: 1 complaint
  • 2021 Model 3: 3 complaints
  • 2022 Model 3: 1 complaint
  • 2023 Model 3: 4 complaints
  • 2024 Model 3: 1 complaint
  • 2025 Model 3: none

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2022 Model 3 owner, NHTSA complaint 11702595: "This car uses auto-dimming rear view and side mirrors. However, the rear view mirror is only able to be dimmed automatically, or be disabled in the settings."

A 2023 Model 3 owner, NHTSA complaint 11696488: "While driving, the side mirrors closed and the doors locked by themselves. Then, the front trunk opened, the rear trunk opened, and when I opened the door, the headlights turned on and the front trunk opened again. When I opened the door another time, the side mirrors didn’t unfold, and the headlights started blinking."

Recalls that cover the side mirror on the 2017–2025 Model 3

As of September 18, 2026, NHTSA lists no recall on the 2017–2025 Tesla Model 3 whose defect is in the side mirror. If your car has a warning light or a symptom that a recall could explain, check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls anyway — it takes a minute.

Which side mirror a 2017–2025 Model 3 takes

Mirrors differ by heat, turn signal, blind-spot indicator, camera and power fold, which vary by trim more than by year. The 2017–2025 Tesla Model 3 came with several powertrains, among them Electric Single-speed AWD and Electric Single-speed RWD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
