What 2019–2025 RAV4 owners report about the suspension
Owners have filed 4 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention a control arm or ball joint on the 2019–2025 Toyota RAV4, and 42 filed under its suspension. Those 4, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:
- 2019 RAV4: 2 complaints
- 2020 RAV4: 1 complaint
- 2021 RAV4: none
- 2022 RAV4: none
- 2023 RAV4: 1 complaint
- 2024 RAV4: none
- 2025 RAV4: none
NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.
A 2020 RAV4 owner, NHTSA complaint 11612737: "I took my car to the dealer this week and was told I need to replace both front lower control arms. I noticed other cars for that year have a recall for this specific problem so I called Toyota but I was told that I had 0 recalls on my vehicle."
A 2023 RAV4 owner, NHTSA complaint 11589078: "Happened at ~644pm on 04/08/24- I heard the noise like a thump or thunk, The car initially pulled towards the roadside, then I corrected the wheel and slowly stopped the car. Upon exiting the car, it became apparent that the ball joint broke just above the plate that attaches to the axle."
Recalls that cover the control arm kit on the 2019–2025 RAV4
- 20V286000, 2019 and 2020 models: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid vehicles. The front lower suspension arms may have cracks, which may result in the suspension arm separating from the front wheel assembly. Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front lower suspension arms, free of charge.
A recall repair is free at any Toyota dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.
Which control arm kit a 2019–2025 RAV4 takes
Arms differ by drivetrain and by suspension package, and some trims use aluminium arms where others use steel. The 2019–2025 Toyota RAV4 came with several powertrains, among them 2.5L I4 Automatic AWD and 2.5L I4 CVT AWD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
