What 2015–2020 F-150 owners report about the suspension

Owners have filed 12 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention a control arm or ball joint on the 2015–2020 Ford F-150, and 73 filed under its suspension. Those 12, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2015 F-150: 4 complaints
  • 2016 F-150: 1 complaint
  • 2017 F-150: 3 complaints
  • 2018 F-150: 2 complaints
  • 2019 F-150: none
  • 2020 F-150: 2 complaints

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2017 F-150 owner, NHTSA complaint 11676974: "I was driving on the PA turnpike and upon hitting a pothole or bump the mount on the frame that the lower control arm bolts onto broke off. I was going under the speed limit with two small children in the car and a piece of my frame broke off after a slight bump."

A 2020 F-150 owner, NHTSA complaint 11490503: "At 20,000 mile my 2020 f150 has a horrific freaking noise coming from the passenger side lower control arm. It was aligned at ford dealership 10,000 miles ago. I did check the nut and bolt to confirm they were tight. It is obvious via witness marks that the bolt is moving and removing the frame powder coating."

Recalls that cover the control arm kit on the 2015–2020 F-150

  • 21E027000, 2015–2018 models: Tenneco Automotive (DRiV) is recalling certain MOOG K500359 ball joints, for aftermarket installation on 2015-2018 Ford F-150 trucks. The ball joint may have a misaligned dust boot and may be missing alignment hole and installation warning tag, which may lead to improper alignment of the ball joint. DRiV will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, and if necessary replace the ball joint, free of charge.

A recall repair is free at any Ford dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.

Which control arm kit a 2015–2020 F-150 takes

Arms differ by drivetrain and by suspension package, and some trims use aluminium arms where others use steel. The 2015–2020 Ford F-150 came with several powertrains, among them 2.7L V6 Automatic 4WD, 3.3L V6 Automatic RWD, 3.5L V6 Automatic 4WD and 5.0L V8 Automatic 4WD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
