What 2020–2025 Explorer owners report about the suspension

Owners have filed 14 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the struts on the 2020–2025 Ford Explorer, and 81 filed under its suspension. Those 14, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2020 Explorer: 1 complaint
  • 2021 Explorer: none
  • 2022 Explorer: none
  • 2023 Explorer: 8 complaints
  • 2024 Explorer: 3 complaints
  • 2025 Explorer: 2 complaints

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2020 Explorer owner, NHTSA complaint 11703470: "I was replacing the rear struts on 12/5/25. I noticed that both speedlogix vertical links were cracked in the exact same location. I called Speedlogix and they said they no longer carried those links (I see why). Asked for a refund and doesn’t appear I am going to get one. They were purchased November of 2024."

A 2023 Explorer owner, NHTSA complaint 11638233: "popping/rattling sound coming from front passenger side and transmission is shifting hard at lower gears. vehicle is in shop waiting on repairs. front struts bad and had to be replaced at 12,555 miles. transmission software had to be upgraded and wiring harness for transmission under vehicle had to be repaired."

Recalls that cover the complete strut pair on the 2020–2025 Explorer

  • 24V091000, 2023 models: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2023 Explorer vehicles. The right-front lower fastener connecting the steering knuckle and strut may be loose or missing. Dealers will inspect the fasteners, and tighten or install them as necessary, free of charge.

A recall repair is free at any Ford dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.

Which complete strut pair a 2020–2025 Explorer takes

Struts differ by drivetrain, spring rate and trim, and cars with adaptive damping need a strut wired for it. The 2020–2025 Ford Explorer came with several powertrains, among them 2.3L I4 Automatic 4WD and 3.0L V6 Automatic 4WD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
