What 2014–2018 Silverado owners report about the suspension

Owners have filed 22 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention a control arm or ball joint on the 2014–2018 Chevrolet Silverado, and 167 filed under its suspension. Those 22, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2014 Silverado: 4 complaints
  • 2015 Silverado: 1 complaint
  • 2016 Silverado: 4 complaints
  • 2017 Silverado: 6 complaints
  • 2018 Silverado: 7 complaints

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2017 Silverado owner, NHTSA complaint 11567590: "Vehicle was making a loud cracking sound with every turn. Upon inspection, it was determined that the upper ball joint popped out"

A 2018 Silverado owner, NHTSA complaint 11743834: "I was driving on the highway at about 70 mph and the passenger side lower control arm where the ball joint sits broke. It messed up the passenger fender and tire along with the steering link. It also bent the upper control arm as well. The ball joints were replaced about 6 months ago."

Recalls that cover the control arm kit on the 2014–2018 Silverado

  • 16V256000, 2016 and 2017 models: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2016 Cadillac Escalade, Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL vehicles. GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left and right front upper control arms and realign the vehicle, free of charge.

A recall repair is free at any Chevrolet dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.

Which control arm kit a 2014–2018 Silverado takes

Arms differ by drivetrain and by suspension package, and some trims use aluminium arms where others use steel. The 2014–2018 Chevrolet Silverado came with several powertrains, among them 4.3L V6 Automatic RWD, 5.3L V8 Automatic 4WD and 6.2L V8 Automatic 4WD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
