Freeze-thaw breaks road surfaces apart, and a hard strike is a large one-directional load. The rim takes it first and the energy carries on: the bearing races take small indentations that go quiet for months, the geometry moves, the control arm bushings tear, and the strut rod can bend enough to bind.

The regular corrugation that forms across an unpaved road works a damper at high frequency and small amplitude for miles at a time. A damper turns movement into heat, and that is movement without pause — the fluid heats, the damping fades, and it does not come back the way it was.

Nothing leaks and nothing announces itself. The test costs nothing: push down hard on one corner and release. The car should rise and settle in a single movement.

Buy the assembly, because the removal is the expensive half

In a salted climate the cost of this job is dominated by getting the old one out, not by the part. The lower bolt bonds itself into its sleeve, the top mount fasteners corrode, and the spring seat rusts.

A complete strut assembly — damper, spring, mount and bearing plate — costs more and is usually the cheaper job, because nobody is fighting a rusted spring compressor on components that have done the same miles as the damper and will need doing again shortly.

The winter is long and the salting is heavy, so the salt-belt failures apply in full.

Grades load a damper continuously

Descending a sustained grade keeps weight forward and the front dampers working the whole way down, with none of the recovery a flat road gives them. Cornering continuously on the way adds lateral load the same components have to control.

That is heat, and heat is what fades damping. Monotube designs cope with it markedly better than twin-tube, which is a real distinction here rather than a specification-sheet one.

The state's inspection programme lasted eleven years, from 1968 until it was repealed in 1979. A tired strut fails no test and gets no warning light. It is found by how the car behaves, which is why it is the part people put off longest.

Rapid City's normal annual snowfall is 48.5 inches against only 17.44 inches of total precipitation — most of the year's moisture arrives frozen. Heat thins the oil inside a damper and cold thickens it, and a strut that has done a decade of both has lost the middle of its range.

Testing brake fluid for water takes a minute and it is the item that decides how a descent goes. Engine braking is free and it is what the low gears exist for.
