Complete Strut Assembly Pair in New Hampshire

A strut carries the corner of the car and controls what the spring does after a bump. In New Hampshire what decides how long it lasts is impact damage rather than gradual wear. We hold 10 options from Bilstein, Gabriel and KYB, and we check the fit against your exact vehicle before anything ships.

The impact does not stop at the wheel

Freeze-thaw breaks road surfaces apart, and a hard strike is a large one-directional load. The rim takes it first and the energy carries on: the bearing races take small indentations that go quiet for months, the geometry moves, the control arm bushings tear, and the strut rod can bend enough to bind.

A bent rod shows as a knock on rebound and a car that never quite settles after a crest. An alignment after any significant impact is part of the repair rather than an upsell.

Frost heave lifts a section of roadbed and drops it unevenly, so what you get is humps and dips rather than holes.

Washboard fades a damper rather than breaking it

The regular corrugation that forms across an unpaved road works a damper at high frequency and small amplitude for miles at a time. A damper turns movement into heat, and that is movement without pause — the fluid heats, the damping fades, and it does not come back the way it was.

Nothing leaks and nothing announces itself. The test costs nothing: push down hard on one corner and release. The car should rise and settle in a single movement.

Buy the assembly, because the removal is the expensive half

In a salted climate the cost of this job is dominated by getting the old one out, not by the part. The lower bolt bonds itself into its sleeve, the top mount fasteners corrode, and the spring seat rusts.

A complete strut assembly — damper, spring, mount and bearing plate — costs more and is usually the cheaper job, because nobody is fighting a rusted spring compressor on components that have done the same miles as the damper and will need doing again shortly.

Grades load a damper continuously

Descending a sustained grade keeps weight forward and the front dampers working the whole way down, with none of the recovery a flat road gives them. Cornering continuously on the way adds lateral load the same components have to control.

That is heat, and heat is what fades damping. Monotube designs cope with it markedly better than twin-tube, which is a real distinction here rather than a specification-sheet one.

The notches are not hills: a sustained grade measured in minutes of continuous descent.

The spring and the top mount corrode too

Salt-laden air reaches the coil itself, and a corroded spring does not sag gracefully — it breaks, usually at the last coil, usually in cold weather, and often the broken end goes into the tyre.

The top mount's bearing is the other casualty: seized, it makes the steering notchy and creaks on lock. Both are inside a complete assembly, which is a large part of why one is worth buying here.

Does this state inspect your car

The annual safety and emissions inspection ended with the 2025 state budget, and by February 2026 neither state nor local police were enforcing an inspection sticker. A tired strut fails no test and gets no warning light. It is found by how the car behaves, which is why it is the part people put off longest.

The roads that decide how long brakes last

The Mount Washington Auto Road climbs 7.6 miles at an average grade of 12 percent with no guardrails, and the operator asks for lowest gear on the way down. What a damper spends its life doing is set by the ground underneath it, and a worn one only gives itself away on ground that asks something of it.

The notches

Franconia, Crawford, Pinkham. These are not hills — they are sustained grades measured in minutes of continuous descent, and they ask something of a brake system that no amount of city driving does.

Braking converts motion into heat. On a flat road that happens in short bursts with cooling in between, and the system sheds it easily. On a long descent it is continuous, and the failures arrive in a predictable order:

What else New Hampshire does to a car

Sustained winter cold rather than occasional cold, so everything electrical is asked for more exactly as it can give less.

What we hold, and what it costs

10 options from Bilstein, Gabriel, KYB, Monroe and Sachs, from $309.99 to $469.99. Prices are firm — where we have no price we publish none.

We are a reseller rather than a manufacturer: we source the part, check it over and sell it, and we confirm it against your year, make, model and engine before it ships rather than asserting a fit on the page. We ship anywhere in New Hampshire, including Manchester, Nashua, Concord and Dover.
