Complete Strut Assembly Pair in California

A strut carries the corner of the car and controls what the spring does after a bump. In California what decides how long it lasts is sustained loading on long descents. We hold 10 options from Bilstein, Gabriel and KYB, and we check the fit against your exact vehicle before anything ships.

Grades load a damper continuously

Descending a sustained grade keeps weight forward and the front dampers working the whole way down, with none of the recovery a flat road gives them. Cornering continuously on the way adds lateral load the same components have to control.

That is heat, and heat is what fades damping. Monotube designs cope with it markedly better than twin-tube, which is a real distinction here rather than a specification-sheet one.

Sierra grades are long, and the descent is where a brake system is judged.

The spring and the top mount corrode too

Salt-laden air reaches the coil itself, and a corroded spring does not sag gracefully — it breaks, usually at the last coil, usually in cold weather, and often the broken end goes into the tyre.

The top mount's bearing is the other casualty: seized, it makes the steering notchy and creaks on lock. Both are inside a complete assembly, which is a large part of why one is worth buying here.

Coastal air carries salt inland far enough to reach cars that never park by the sea.

Does this state inspect your car

California appears in neither column of the federal record of state safety inspection programmes — not among the states that required one, and not among those that repealed one. A tired strut fails no test and gets no warning light. It is found by how the car behaves, which is why it is the part people put off longest.

The climate, in a number

Fresno averages 38.4 days a year at or above 100°F on the 1991 to 2020 normals. Heat thins the oil inside a damper and cold thickens it, and a strut that has done a decade of both has lost the middle of its range.

The rule that only applies here

Every other state treats an aftermarket catalytic converter, air intake or engine calibration as a purchasing decision. California treats it as a legal one.

The California Air Resources Board issues an Executive Order number to a part that has been tested and shown not to increase emissions on the specific applications it is approved for. A part with an EO number is legal to fit to those vehicles. A part without one is not — regardless of whether it works, whether it is well made, or whether the car passes a tailpipe test with it on.

What else California does to a car

No road salt anywhere in the state, so corrosion arrives from the air rather than from underneath.

What we hold, and what it costs

10 options from Bilstein, Gabriel, KYB, Monroe and Sachs, from $309.99 to $469.99. Prices are firm — where we have no price we publish none.

We are a reseller rather than a manufacturer: we source the part, check it over and sell it, and we confirm it against your year, make, model and engine before it ships rather than asserting a fit on the page. We ship anywhere in California, including Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and the Bay Area and Sacramento.
