Hella Headlight Levelling Motor

Hella · SKU SAP-00356

A headlight levelling motor tilts the reflector or projector inside the lamp up or down to keep the beam on the road as load and pitch change. On cars with automatic levelling it takes its commands from ride-height sensors on the suspension; with manual levelling, from a dash dial. A failed motor leaves the beam stuck high, dazzling other drivers, or stuck low. Hella makes headlamps and their electronics for carmakers, and after fitting, the base aim has to be set.

In the box: The assembly or module; Fixings where supplied.

Calibration required. This part must be calibrated to the vehicle after fitting. Without it the system does not fail safely — it reports confident, wrong readings.

Fit check before payment

Order it now. We confirm it fits your car before you pay.

After you place the order, tell us the car's year, make and model, or the VIN, and what the part is for. A person checks the part against that car and sends the invoice only once it is right. If it is not the right part, we cancel the order and you owe nothing.

Common questions

Will the Hella Headlight Levelling Motor fit my car?
You can order it now, and we confirm it fits before you pay. For this part, fit comes down to the lighting package the car was built with (halogen, LED or adaptive matrix), the levelling system, the side and the connector. After you place the order, tell us the car's year, make and model, or the VIN, and what the part is for, either in the checkout notes or in the chat on this site. A person checks the part against that car and sends the invoice only once it is right. If it is not the right part, we cancel the order and you owe nothing.
Is the Hella Headlight Levelling Motor new or used?
New. It is a new aftermarket part made by Hella, not a used or rebuilt unit.
Does the Hella Headlight Levelling Motor need calibrating after it is fitted?
Yes. It has to be calibrated to the car after fitting, with a scan tool or the manufacturer's procedure. Without that, the system does not fail safely: it reports confident readings that are wrong.
What warranty does the Hella Headlight Levelling Motor have?
It carries Hella's manufacturer warranty. Hella's terms differ between product lines, so ask in the chat and we give you the terms for this exact part before you pay.
Can you replace just the bulb in an LED headlight?
On most factory full-LED headlights, no. The diodes are built into the sealed headlight assembly and are not sold separately. What can often be replaced is the LED driver or control module, which is the more common failure. If the module tests good and a section of the lamp is still dark, the whole headlight assembly normally has to be replaced.
What are the symptoms of a bad LED headlight control module?
A failing LED headlight control module usually causes one headlight to go dark completely, flicker, or work only in low or high beam. A headlight warning on the dash and stored lighting codes are common. Because the module and the diodes are separate, check for a module or wiring fault before replacing the whole headlight assembly.
Do new LED headlights need to be coded or calibrated?
Often, yes. Many cars with adaptive, matrix, or self-levelling LED headlights need the new assembly or module coded to the vehicle with a scan tool, followed by a basic setting for aim and levelling. Skipping it can leave warning lights, a beam that glares at other drivers, or adaptive functions that stay switched off.
What is the difference between matrix LED and regular LED headlights?
A matrix LED headlight splits the high beam into many individually controlled segments. Using the windshield camera, the car switches off only the segments that would dazzle oncoming or leading traffic, so the rest of the road stays lit on high beam. A regular full-LED headlight simply switches between a fixed low beam and a fixed high beam.
How do I know if my headlight levelling motor is bad?
A bad headlight levelling motor typically leaves the beam stuck pointing too high or too low, ignores the dash adjuster or the automatic levelling, or makes a clicking noise at startup. Automatic systems may show a headlight warning. After fitting a new levelling motor, check the headlight aim, and run a levelling calibration if the car has automatic levelling.
Should I replace both LED headlights at the same time?
Replacing only the failed LED headlight is normal, but expect the new lens to look clearer and the light color to differ slightly from the aged side. If the other headlight has a yellowed lens, moisture inside, or is close to failing, replacing both gives an even beam. Either way, have the aim checked after installation.
Is moisture inside an LED headlight normal?
A light film of condensation that clears within an hour or so of the headlights being on is normal, because headlight housings breathe through vents. Standing water, droplets that never clear, or fogging after every wash point to a cracked housing, a failed seal, or a blocked vent. Persistent water can corrode the LED driver and connectors.
