A timing belt synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft. Kits usually include the belt, tensioner and idler pulleys, because replacing the belt alone risks a failure of the parts around it. Intervals are typically 60,000 to 100,000 miles, and on an interference engine a snapped belt destroys valves.
