What 2017–2025 Model 3 owners report about the exterior lighting
Owners have filed 55 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the headlights on the 2017–2025 Tesla Model 3, and 79 filed under its exterior lighting. Those 55, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:
- 2017 Model 3: none
- 2018 Model 3: 19 complaints
- 2019 Model 3: 5 complaints
- 2020 Model 3: 4 complaints
- 2021 Model 3: 13 complaints
- 2022 Model 3: 12 complaints
- 2023 Model 3: 1 complaint
- 2024 Model 3: 1 complaint
- 2025 Model 3: none
NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.
A 2019 Model 3 owner, NHTSA complaint 11632712: "We own a 2019 Tesla model 3 which had a left front headlight stop working (headlight, turn signal, and daytime running light). As soon as the headlight went out the windshield wipers stopped working. The vehicle does not have fuses but the headlight and wipers share a wiring circuit."
A 2022 Model 3 owner, NHTSA complaint 11641101: "My car just made 50k and is out of warranty and the headlight fail. I contacted Tesla and they quote $1800 to fix it. When I went on the internet and found out that this is very common and seems to be a bad design. Can you do anything so they redesign and recall so we consumers are not ripped off by Tesla?"
Recalls that cover the headlight assembly on the 2017–2025 Model 3
- 26V507000, 2017–2023 models: Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2017-2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles. The headlight low beams may be too bright and exceed the maximum light output. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment." The remedy is currently under development.
A recall repair is free at any Tesla dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.
Which headlight assembly a 2017–2025 Model 3 takes
Headlights differ between halogen and LED trims, by adaptive or auto-levelling function, and by side. The 2017–2025 Tesla Model 3 came with several powertrains, among them Electric Single-speed AWD and Electric Single-speed RWD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
