What 2017–2025 Model 3 owners report about the brakes

Owners have filed 5 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention a brake caliper on the 2017–2025 Tesla Model 3, and 553 filed under its brakes. Those 5, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:

  • 2017 Model 3: none
  • 2018 Model 3: 1 complaint
  • 2019 Model 3: 2 complaints
  • 2020 Model 3: 1 complaint
  • 2021 Model 3: none
  • 2022 Model 3: none
  • 2023 Model 3: none
  • 2024 Model 3: 1 complaint
  • 2025 Model 3: none

NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.

A 2020 Model 3 owner, NHTSA complaint 11577318: "Braking and Stopping - Braking system - Improperly functioning braking systems. I experienced a problem with the brake pedal, brake calipers, and/or any component of a Model 3 braking system. “Model 3 has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) that prevents the wheels from locking when you apply maximum brake pressure."

A 2024 Model 3 owner, NHTSA complaint 11750946: "2024 Model 3, under 20k miles; burning smell and brake drag from right rear wheel while driving; parking brake fault alerts UI_a019, EPBR_a176, EPBR_a182; dealer inspection found cracked EPB caliper case housing near the electrical connector; Tesla SB-20-33-002 documents this same crack occurring without external…"

Recalls that cover the brake caliper on the 2017–2025 Model 3

  • 21V387000, 2019–2021 models: Tesla, Inc. (Tesla) is recalling certain 2019-2021 Model 3 and 2020-2021 Model Y vehicles. The brake caliper bolts may be loose, allowing the brake caliper to separate and contact the wheel rim. Tesla Service will inspect and tighten, or replace the caliper bolts as necessary, free of charge.

A recall repair is free at any Tesla dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.

Which brake caliper a 2017–2025 Model 3 takes

Calipers differ by brake package — trims with larger rotors take larger calipers — and by axle and side. The 2017–2025 Tesla Model 3 came with several powertrains, among them Electric Single-speed AWD and Electric Single-speed RWD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
