What 2017–2022 CR-V owners report about the steering
Owners have filed 345 complaints with NHTSA, the US federal vehicle-safety regulator, that mention the steering rack or the power steering on the 2017–2022 Honda CR-V, and 862 filed under its steering. Those 345, by model year, as of September 18, 2026:
- 2017 CR-V: 58 complaints
- 2018 CR-V: 142 complaints
- 2019 CR-V: 63 complaints
- 2020 CR-V: 17 complaints
- 2021 CR-V: 28 complaints
- 2022 CR-V: 37 complaints
NHTSA publishes complaints as owners wrote them and does not verify them, so read them as a pattern rather than a diagnosis.
A 2019 CR-V owner, NHTSA complaint 11757240: "While driving at highway speeds (approx. 55–70 mph) in a straight line, the vehicle's electronic power steering experiences a dangerous 'binding' or 'sticky' sensation. The steering wheel feels momentarily caught or locked into place when attempting to make minor lane corrections."
A 2020 CR-V owner, NHTSA complaint 11762356: "when turning the steering wheel would momenterily stick. germain honda of college hills said steering motor bad. replaced motor ,but still was sticky, said needed steering rack also. that fixed it for a total of 7500 hundred dollars. complained but have not receive any compansation."
Recalls that cover the steering rack on the 2017–2022 CR-V
- 18V663000, 2017 and 2018 models: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Honda Civic and CR-V vehicles. The magnet that controls the torque sensor output signal for the electronic power steering system may not be properly secured, allowing the magnet to become dislodged. During a full lock turn, the dislodged magnet may cause steering assist to be applied in the opposite direction. Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering gearbox assembly, free of charge.
A recall repair is free at any Honda dealer. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls before you pay anyone for this part — us included.
Which steering rack a 2017–2022 CR-V takes
Racks differ by steering ratio, by whether the assist motor is on the rack, and on sport trims by the rack itself. The 2017–2022 Honda CR-V came with several powertrains, among them 1.5L I4 CVT AWD and 2.4L I4 CVT FWD. That is why we ask for the VIN, or the year, engine and trim, and confirm the part against it before you pay rather than after it arrives.
